Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey injured his left ankle this week and will need surgery, the team announced on June 7.

Edey injured his ankle during an offseason training session. The Grizzlies did not offer a timeline, but the injury is expected to keep Edey out through the beginning of the upcoming season.

Ankle injuries have been an reoccurring issue for Edey since entering the NBA. He first injured his left ankle while playing summer league in July of 2024. His first major NBA injury was also a left ankle injury that resulted in him missing 12 games.

The latest ankle injury resulted in surgery being the best option for Edey going forward.

Memphis drafted Edey ninth overall in 2024 and was quickly rewarded. He played in 66 games, averaging 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds. Edey was named as a member of the All-Rookie first team in May.

Ankle surgery will be the latest obstacle in Edey's career. He won't have the normal developmental arc of a second-year player. Edey planned on playing summer league, but that won't happen now after his injury.
