Maple Leafs GM Breaks Silence on Reported Mitch Marner-Golden Knights Trade Rumor originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
With Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner just days away from unrestricted free agency, speculation surrounding a potential sign-and-trade involving the Vegas Golden Knights ramped up on Saturday.
Multiple insiders, including Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and TSN's Darren Dreger, reported that the Maple Leafs and Golden Knights have been working on a deal that would send Marner’s negotiating rights to Vegas before July 1.
“On-and-off this week, Toronto and Vegas have been discussing the possibility of a sign-and-trade involving Mitch Marner,” Friedman reported.
According to Dreger, there was “no trade call, nothing signed,” as of Saturday night.
Meanwhile, fellow NHL insider Bruce Garrioch reported that Toronto has asked for two Vegas players, Nicolas Roy and Nicolas Hague, in return for Marner.
Asked directly about the sign-and-trade reports right after the NHL draft finished, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving chose not to confirm or deny them.
"That's a good try, I’m not going to comment,” Treliving said. “As I said the other day, Tuesday is free agency, and we will continue to work away at things. Nothing to report on that front."

Still, Treliving made clear that Toronto’s preference is to get something in return before Marner’s contract ends on July 1 and the franchise loses the star forward for nothing.
"I think you’d always like to get something, right?" Treliving said. "That’s not always the case. That’s probably as far as I want to get into it. But we’ll see how things go."
Marner, 28, had 102 points in 81 games throughout last regular season before scoring 13 more points in 13 postseason outings.
The Maple Leafs drafted Marner with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft. If he leaves Toronto, Marner would do so ranked fifth on Toronto’s all-time scoring list.
