Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark played a WNBA preseason game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa on Sunday. Making her 2025 preseason debut, Clark put on a show in the same building she broke the NCAA scoring record.

Coming off a season in which won WNBA Rookie of the Year with historic averages 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.4 assists, Clark's popularity remains unprecedented. After setting numerous attendance and viewership records her rookie year, Clark picked up right where she left off in Sunday's contest.

Per an official announcement from ESPN, this preseason contest between Indiana and Brazil averaged 1.3 million viewers and peaked at 1.6 million.

This contest came just two days after Brazil faced Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky in a preseason contest. Fans were quick to point out that no such announcement was made about that game, with others mocking Reese in light of Clark making viewership headlines again.

"We never got viewer announcement for Brazil/Sky," said one fan.

"Like come on man angel Reese preseason game ain’t do numbers like this man," said another.

"Thank you Angel Reese," a fan wrote sarcastically.

"Angel Reese effect," one joked. "What were her ratings?"

Early in the 2024 WNBA season, Reese made it clear the league's newfound attention was not just because of Clark, but her too.

"I'll look back in 20 years and be like, the reason why we're watching women's basketball is not just because of one person," she said. "It's because of me, too. I want y'all to realize that."

Angel Reese doesn't mind taking on the "bad guy role" because of how much women's basketball has grown in recent years.

These comments are seemingly why so many WNBA fans are quick to take jabs at Reese when Clark continues driving viewership no other player in the league has been able to generate on a consistent basis. Media personality Jason Whitlock was among those to mock Reese after the news of Indiana's latest ratings.

"The Angel Reese Effect," he wrote.

Citing Sportsnaut, a September 2024 article from Yahoo Sports detailed just how impactful Clark was on viewership in her rookie season.

"On the list of most-watched WNBA games this season, you have to go down to No. 15 to find the first game without the Fever," the article revealed. "That would be a May 18 game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Las Vegas Aces (read: No. 2 pick Cameron Brink's WNBA debut against the defending champs)."
