With the Suns victory last night, the Suns can finish no worse than 10th in the Conference, insuring at worst the 10th seed.

Play-in format:

7/8 seeds play, winner gets 7 seed.
9/10 seeds play, loser is out, winner plays the loser of the 7/8 seed game.
Winner gets the 8th seed.

In summary, a team that is a 7 or 8 seed needs to win one game to make the play-offs
A team that is the 9/10 seed needs to win two games.

Magic Numbers as of 4/19/21 games

The Magic Number is calculated by taking the number of games in the season (72), adding one, subtracting Suns wins and other teams losses. Every Suns win reduces the magic number as does every loss by the other team.
The team next to the seed is the one next in line for that particular seed. For example, the Clippers are currently in third place. The magic number for the Suns represents the combination of Suns wins and Clippers losses to ensure the Suns at minimum the 2 seed

1 Seed (Utah) - 17 (Home Court Through Out Playoffs)
2 Seed (Clippers) - 13 (Home Court 1st and 2nd Rounds)
4 Seed (Lakers) - 9 (Home Court 1st Round)
6 Seed (Mavericks) - 6 (Last non-play-in Seed)
7 Seed (Grizzlies) - 5 (Home Court 7/8 Play-in)
8 Seed (Spurs) - 4 (Need one win in Play-in Game)
9 Seed (Warriors) - 3 (Home Court 9/10 Play-in)

This is why it is important for the Suns to finish 6th or above in the West standings to avoid any possibility of a play-in.

Obviously the Suns want to finish 4th or above to get home court advantage in the first round.

Yup - the wins need to keep piling up.

I like this first-round matchup better than if we had the #1 seed.

Seems like the best thread to put it in.

Just before the most recent road trip, Phoenix had the 2nd most difficult schedule left to play, and Utah had, I believe, the 28th (I don't remember where LAC was).

As of today, Suns are down to 12th, Utah up to 17th, LAC at 26th.

Note, this only accounts for opponent win %.

Just thinking to myself, with 8 games left, how many could the Suns stand to lose and still maintain the #1 seed? Does 6-2 do it? Interestingly we both still play the Spurs twice, as well as Blazers and Warriors once.

Where are the wins and losses for both teams? Let's play this out:

Suns remaining games:

5/4 @ Cavs
5/5 @ Hawks
5/7 vs Knicks
5/9 @ Lakers
5/11 @ Warriors
5/13 vs Blazers
5/15 @ Spurs
5/16 @ Spurs

Jazz remaining games:

5/3 vs Spurs
5/5 vs Spurs
5/7 vs Nuggets
5/8 vs Rockets
5/10 @ Warriors
5/12 vs Blazers
5/14 @ Thunder
5/16 @ Kings

By far the toughest team on this entire list is the Nuggets, and we don't have to worry about them. We COULD run the table, we won't, but we could. The Jazz would find it a lot harder with the Nuggets on their schedule. But they are similar. Jazz have the bonus of having the Rockets and Kings on their schedule, so those two might invalidate the toughness of the Nuggets. Where we have all sorts of problems is with the Spurs...

I like Steph Curry, but the Warriors don't scare me at all.

If we are at full health, we have a ton of defenders to throw at him, and defenders to stop everyone else as well.

With the play-in games, they’ll all get a little rest regardless right after the season. Which will be nice.

Lakers remaining schedule:

Clippers
Blazers
Suns
Knicks
Rockets
Pacers
Pelicans

The way the Lakers are playing right now, not one of those games is a gimme except maybe the Rockets. Could the Lakers miss the . . . naw.
