BATON ROUGE — LSU baseball senior standout relief pitcher Gavin Guidry has been ruled out for the season, Jay Johnson announced after LSU's 10-3 win over McNeese State on Tuesday night.

Guidry is scheduled to have a procedure done on his back Friday and Johnson said the recovery for him "will be shorter" than they anticipated and that he should be fully cleared in three to four months.

"It's a tough break for Gavin," Johnson said. "He's sad. When it finally came to it. Friday was one last-ditch effort after he saw the doctor to see if he could do one more thing. It didn't take."

The anticipation, Johnson said, is Guidry will be back and ready to pitch next season.

It was a long road for Guidry as he tried to make his way back to the diamond.

Guidry has not pitched all season after initially suffering a back injury in a simulated game a week before the season started on Feb. 7. The right-hander was scheduled to pitch against Nicholls State on Feb. 19 but woke up not feeling well which led to an MRI on Feb. 20.

The LSU staff began Guidry on a treatment plan for his back. He started a throwing program on Feb. 25 but his back didn't respond well to the session. He continued treatment but the trainers shut him down from throwing for roughly a month before he threw a bullpen before the Sunday game at Texas on March 23 and again his back flared up.

Two days later, Guidry tried another bullpen but it was more of the same. After the final attempt this past Friday, Guidry and the staff moved forward with him having the procedure done.

"I think there's some peace of mind now," Johnson said. "But we were trying to get him back and he was trying to get back. Last week it got to, 'I can't do it.'

"Luckily for us, those guys (Mavrick) Rizy, (Cooper) Williams, (Jacob) Mayers, you can add those guys as guys that are really excited to add to the mix of (Zac) Cowan, (Casan) Evans and the starters."

LSU star first baseman Jared Jones, who roomed with Guidry when they were freshmen, said that it's upsetting for the team that Guidry done for the season.

"I've known him for three years and I think he's a terrific human being," Jones said. "He had handled this better than anybody I would have expected to handle this. He's the best competitor on our team even though he's not pitching. I know this is hard for me but I'm going to try to be there and support him as best I can.

"He's been great, he's been in good spirits. I know he's upset and very frustrated. But he has not let that show at all and he's been a great teammate. He's always helping out in the dugout and I applaud him for that."
