As LSU baseball entered Sunday's game against Arkansas, the Tigers had already won the series and were looking for the sweep. Arkansas took the lead in the top of the third inning and never looked back as they won this one 7-4.
LSU has used the long ball to control this series in games one and two. The start of game three was no different as the Tigers hit two solo shots in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead 2-0. Luis Hernandez and Stephen Milam were the two Tigers who hit the homers.
Arkansas flipped the game upside down in the top of the third inning. The Hogs took the lead by scoring four runs and ending Casan Evans' day on the mound. Evans was pulled after 3.2 innings, where he gave up four runs on seven hits, four strikeouts, and three walks.
Chase Shores would enter the game to pitch for him. Hernandez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 4-3. LSU had the bases loaded with one out, but Milam grounded into a double play to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Arkansas scored again on an RBI groundout to increase their lead to 5-3. Cooper Williams entered to pitch in the top of the eighth inning for LSU. Shores pitched 3.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits, four strikeouts, and one walk. After recording two outs in the inning, Jacob Mayers entered to pitch. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Chris Stanfield hit an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 5-4.
In the top of the ninth inning, Arkansas loaded the bases with no outs as LSU swapped between multiple pitchers. A walk scored another run to make it 6-4. An RBI single made it 7-4, and the Tigers made another pitching change. Grant Fontenot got the Tigers out of the inning with back-to-back flyouts. Jared Jones struck out to start the bottom of the ninth.
Danny Dickinson singled, and Ethan Frey walked to put runners on first and second and force Arkansas to change pitchers. Cade Arrambide entered to pinch hit, and he struck out for out No. 2. Hernandez lined out to shortstop for out No. three to end the game.
LSU falls to 40-12 overall and 17-10 in conference play with the loss in Game 3. Although the Tigers lost, winning this series against Arkansas is huge for the possibility of being a Top 8 seed nationally. The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to South Carolina for their last conference series of the season.
