Soon after Dan Campbell climbed behind the lectern on Thursday, June 5, he choked up and his eyes turned glassy.

Then he launched into a monologue about Frank Ragnow, the Detroit Lions'All-Pro center who announced his retirement earlier this week.

“He’s done it all,” Campbell said. “And he will be sorely missed. … But man, this train goes on. Train rolls on and it’s the next man up.”

But who that individual is has yet to be determined.

There are options, Campbell noted.

Graham Glasgow, who started at left guard last season, has played in all three spots within the interior offensive line – including center.

The Lions also just signed Trystan Colon, a sixth-year veteran who has experience at the position.

Then there is Tate Ratledge, the rookie second-round pick who has spent a portion of the team’s OTA practices delivering snaps to quarterback Jared Goff.

“It’s different knowing that Frank is out of the fold,” Campbell said. “I hate to use the word, ‘unsettling,’ but there is acknowledgement, like, OK, that’s where we’re at. And now we need growth. We need development quickly.”

Campbell hopes to see it unfold when training camp begins next month. During that period, there will be a competition to replace Ragnow. Glasgow, Colon, Ratledge and even rookie Miles Frazier, a fifth-round pick, are expected to be in mix.

“We’re going to find this out,” Campbell said. “We’re going to let these guys go at it.”
