Lindsey Heaps Calls Olympics "Significantly Harder" Than World Cup After USWNT's Paris Triumph originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Lindsey Heaps considers the Olympics harder than the World Cup. Both tournaments happen over just a few weeks, and the schedule is tight — something that adds to the level of difficulty.

The USWNT returned to friendly matches after more than a month without playing. On the same day as the Club World Cup group stage final, the national team beat the Republic of Ireland 4–0.

With Trinity Rodman not called up, other players stepped up to help the USWNT secure another win under the new coaching staff — including Avery Patterson and Alyssa Thompson, who each scored.

Lindsey was not called up for these preparation matches against the Republic of Ireland (twice) and Canada, to rest after a long European season. However, she made an appearance on a podcast hosted by the Colorado Rapids called The Conversation.

She shared her experiences as a player, explaining why she believes the Olympics are “significantly harder” than the World Cup.

"Because the games are so close together. Games are so close together, and especially with our team, we did not change a lot. We were pretty consistent with our lineups and who we played. So we had a lot of miles on our bodies. I think for me personally, it was a new staff. It was a lot of new staff. And making sure everyone got meshed together and kind of being, I guess, like the middle man with a lot of things. I took a lot of pride in the role that I played there."

Heaps plays key role in USWNT’s transitional era

The captain of the USWNT was part of the last generation of players that dominated the women's soccer. Alongside legends like Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Rose LaVelle, Heaps lifted the 2019 World Cup trophy.

Now, she takes a bigger role as one of the veterans in a roster full of young stars ready to fight for their spot in the call-up for the 2027 World Cup, in Brazil.

Lindsey Heaps career stats (USWNT)

  • 167 caps;
