The needle hasn’t always been pointed up for the Dallas Cowboys’ Jaydon Blue. The rookie running back didn’t exactly hit the ground running, struggling to digest the playbook and he even had his focus and work ethic called into question along the way.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed such reports when he discussed Blue’s slow start with the team. He also highlighted Blue is “figuring it out" now and spoke to the rookie’s competitiveness and maturation in preparation.

For the first time in camp Blue received first team snaps at RB. It was an honor that didn’t go unnoticed and hopefully serves as reinforcement for his new commitment to the game. Blue brings a special skillset to the position no one else can touch, making his progression paramount to the cause.

Looking back, the Cowboys raised some eyebrows when they waited until the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft to address the running back position. RB was an area of weakness for the Cowboys in the season prior and aside from swapping a couple low-cost veterans for new low-cost veterans, they did very little to address it in free agency.

Blue would go on to be the Cowboys' top RB draft pick but the hometown hero was an odd choice for a team without a true RB1 on the roster. Blue wasn’t even a RB1 at Texas so it would be unrealistic to expect him to suddenly jump into the role in the NFL. But that was fine with the Cowboys because they weren’t necessarily shopping for an RB1.

What the Cowboys need from Blue is trust and consistency. They know he can bust big plays, but can he hit the right hole with patience? Can he pick up the right blitzer at the right time when in pass protection? Can he be the role player in the committee that they need him to be?

All of those questions will hopefully be answered in coming weeks. Only now did Blue earn his way into the conversation.

Blue had a slow start with Dallas but now appears to be on the right track for a big role in the Cowboys RB committee.
