The Arch Manning era in Austin, Texas, is set to begin as he prepares to take over as the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns in 2025. Manning is the grandson of legendary college football quarterback Archie Manning and the nephew of NFL icons Peyton and Eli Manning. Throughout his first two seasons in Austin, he has primarily served as a backup to Quinn Ewers.
Ewers has now moved on to the NFL, being drafted in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins. Manning, a former five-star recruit, has thrown for a total of 969 yards, with nine touchdown passes and two interceptions in his career. He is now looking to lead the Longhorns to their first national championship since 2005.
The excitement surrounding Manning is growing. Despite having limited playing time thus far, he is considered one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. This attention has caught the eye of former SEC football legend Aaron Murray.

Murray had a successful career during which he achieved several notable accomplishments. He is the SEC passing touchdown leader and the SEC career passing yards leader. In addition, he was named the MVP of the 2013 Capital One Bowl, received second-team All-SEC honors twice, and was recognized as a freshman All-American.
He appeared on College Sports on Sirius XM radio, where he advised listeners to temper the hype surrounding the Manning legacy.
"I am not sold like so many other people are that this guy is going to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, that he's just going to be unbelievable," Murray said. "That he's going to be the next coming of Peyton and Eli, but that's mobile... If you are so good, and everyone has you projected as the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft come 2026, why in the hell are you not playing above a seventh-round quarterback?"
Murray admitted he was a big fan of Ewers heading into last season. He recognized that Ewers sometimes showed some promise but believed he was holding the team back, especially considering they had one of the sport's top two or three rosters. Murray felt that Ewers' draft position indicated that even NFL scouts were not seeing the same potential that some observers had recognized before the season.
Murray believes that head coach Steve Sarkisian would not have put Ewers on the field if he thought that Manning was significantly better, despite Ewers' experience and having a championship-caliber roster. After watching Manning’s tape, Murray concluded that while it looks good at times, it doesn't necessarily indicate first-round talent to him. He thinks Manning has potential but is currently more of a middle-tier quarterback in the SEC.
Manning will begin his season on the road against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 30 at noon ET.
