Lando Norris gave Max Verstappen credit where it was due—with a cheeky twist—after the Red Bull star claimed pole position for the Miami Grand Prix.

Speaking after qualifying P2, Norris grinned as he praised Verstappen’s performance just days after becoming a father for the first time. “Congrats to Max, especially being a dad now. I was hoping it would slow him down!” Norris joked. “Max did a Max lap once again and I can’t fault him.”

Verstappen was unstoppable, pulling out a trademark lap in Q3 to seal his seventh consecutive pole position—and his first since the birth of his daughter Lily earlier this week. “Clearly it didn’t make me slower, being a dad,” Verstappen said. “We can throw that out the window for the people mentioning it!”

Norris, meanwhile, was upbeat about his own progress after a rough few weekends. “I’m happy with today, happy with the progress I’ve made with the car,” he said. “The pace was there. The car has been feeling good—better than I have done the last few weekends.”

The McLaren driver admitted a small error at Turn 17 may have cost him a shot at pole. “It’s all should’ve, could’ve, would’ve stuff. I didn’t deliver, but it is what it is,” he said.

Looking ahead to the race, Norris is bracing for unpredictable conditions. “I don’t mind if it’s dry or wet, but Miami has been surprising with the weather, so I’m ready for both.”
