At least it isn't Arizona rain....In Arizona, when it rains, it rains really hard. Our rain is so hard that it is called "monsoons".

<p>Yeah--when you only rain one time a year, you gotta make it last a long time so it better be hard. I know there's a joke in the above statement, but I can't figure out how to state it without being thrown off this board.

I moved here from Scottsdale( in September 2002) after living there for almost 14 years. I feel like I'm in Seattle.......it's rained here so much since we got here. They are already 8" above normal for this time of the year.......and to think that the average annual rainfall for AZ is 7". But I'll tell ya.......this really is a TERRIFIC place to live.......you couldn't get me to move back to AZ for love nor money.......that's how much we love it here.

You're kidding I hope.

Monsoon refers to a seasonal shift in winds, generally bringing with it increased moisture and thus rain.

Actually the name "monsoons" has NOTHING to do with rain.....it occurs when there are three consecutive days where the dew point remains over 55 degrees.......I'm sure Sean will remind you all about this later this spring/summer.

No. About the only time it rains is during the monsoon season. :D

And when it rains outside of the monsoon season, it still rains just as hard. :D

You're nuts. The dew point thing is only here in Arizona. So, use the dictionary and look up the word monsoon. You will find nothing mentions dew point. Keep in mind, I said increased moisture.

The reason they use the word "Monsoon" here in Arizona? In late June or early July our winds which normally flow from the Southwest begins to flow from a Southeast direction bringing with it moisture laden air from the Gulf of Mexico.

Three consecutive days of a dew point of 55 or higher is used by the local weather gurus to determine if the shift in winds is here for a while.
