Jalen Brunson and the No. 3 seed New York Knicks closed out their first-round playoff series against the No. 6 seed Detroit Pistons on Thursday night, going on the road and notching a 116-113 final score.
The Knicks were once again led by a masterful performance from Brunson, who recorded a game-high 40 points to go along with eight assists. The NBA's 2024-25 Clutch Player of the Year showed exactly why he won that award, shaking Detroit's Ausar Thompson with a crossover move and knocking down a game-winning three pointer in the waning seconds of the contest.
Brunson averaged 31.5 points and 8.2 assists per game in the Knicks' first-round series win, shooting 43.6% from the field and 33.3% from behind the 3-point arc.
Thursday night's 40-point playoff outing marked the seventh of Brunson's career, tying him with New York legend Bernard King at the top of the franchise's all-time list.
"Jalen Brunson scored 40 points tonight against Detroit. This marks his seventh career 40+ point playoff game as a Knick, which is tied with Bernard King for the most in franchise history," the Knicks wrote on X.
“It’s all about us staying poised and having our composure. Obviously, we want to have it throughout the game, but it’s most important at the end. We all have each other’s backs, and we all know what we want to do. And I’m just thankful for my teammates and coaches,” Brunson said during his postgame press conference.

“Obviously, everyone’s going to say a lot about the last shot, but throughout the game, the ups and downs of it, we all stay composed," he continued. "And the way [Mikal Bridges] played, it was… it was tremendous. So, you got to give a lot of credit to my teammates.”
Brunson and the Knicks now move on to a Round 2 matchup against Jayson Tatum and the reigning NBA-champion Bostons Celtics.
