Kevin Durant is tired of former NFL players' hot takes about NBA players and teams on sports TV debate shows.
The Phoenix Suns star posted a scathing message on X in reaction to Fox Sports analyst Emmanuel Acho's comments on a May 15 episode of The Facility about Jayson Tatum of the defending champion Boston Celtics. Acho said that 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown is a better leader in Boston than his fellow All-Star Tatum.
Durant didn't appreciate that opinion.
"Hot take artist(s) have ruined the sport. Football guys, no disrespect but y'all boys need to stay in ya lanes," Durant posted on his X account. "You don’t know what it’s like it between these lines man give it a break. Dudes who quit football early to pursue media talkin mental toughness, cut it out."
Acho, who played four seasons in the NFL, spoke about Tatum and Brown following the defending champion Celtics' 127-102 blowout home win over the New York Knicks on May 14. The victory forced a Game 6 in their Eastern Conference semifinals series, which Boston trails 3-2. Brown scored 26 points, added a game-high 12 assists and eight rebounds.
During the Celtics' Game 5 loss at New York, Tatum scored 42 points before he suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in the closing minutes.
Acho also reposted a clip of his hot take about Tatum and Brown on X with the caption, "The Celtics match up better against the Knicks without Jayson Tatum than they do with him. Give me two minutes to show you something you may have missed, and I’ll convince you exactly why."
Acho explained in his diatribe to The Facility co-host and former NFL wide receiver James Jones that it's "not because of talent, but exclusively because of mindset" and the Celtics are "not as tough" led by Tatum.
To Durant's point, there has been an increased wave of former NFL players on sports debate shows and popular podcasts offering their polarizing hot takes about the NBA that have gone viral over the past few years. ESPN's Pat McAfee on his show, Marcus Spears and the embattled Shannon Sharpe on First Take, and Fox Sports' Keyshawn Johnson, in addition to Acho and Jones, to name a few.
Durant, who's an NFL fan, is known for his acerbic responses to hot takes on social media from fans and on TV shows from firebrand journalists and former professional athletes on those shows.
On May 14, Durant won the 2024-25 season's Magic Johnson Award from the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA) for displaying the best on-court excellence, embracing media interviews and engaging with fans.
