Kennard-Dale is in unchartered territory.
But that's OK because the same thing happened in the PIAA Class 4A semifinal against Fort LeBoeuf and the Rams came away with a 5-2 win.
Now they are playing in their first state final against a Valley View team that has Class 2A and 3A titles on their resume. First pitch is 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12 at Penn State's softball park.
District 3 champion Kennard-Dale (25-2) is led by sophomore righty Taryn Ashenfelter, who eclipsed 300 strikeouts for the season in the Rams' semifinal win. She has an ERA of .817 and has given up just 20 earned runs.
Ashenfelter also leads the team in batting average at .474, with the team coming in at .342. Most of the team's runs are scored by playing small ball, as the Rams have connected for only 10 home runs.
Valley View, ranked No. 3 in the state by MaxPreps, comes in at 22-2 and is the opposite of Kennard-Dale.
The Cougars have a team batting average of .420, led by senior Kalli Karwowski's .566. Taylor Cawley and Karwowski have combined for 27 of the team's 52 homers.
Cawley and junior Abbi Call handle the pitching duties, with Cawley getting twice as much work. She has a .72 ERA with 144 strikeouts and has given up 46 walks.
