The 2025 Kansas City Current are inevitable. With nearly a month and half remaining in the regular season, the Current have secured the NWSL Shield.

Kansas City clinched the regular-season title after a 2-0 win over the Seattle Reign on Saturday, behind a penalty kick from Debinha and a birthday goal from reigning league MVP Temwa Chawinga. The win marked the team's ninth straight clean sheet.

The Current's 2025 season has been nothing short of extraordinary so far. The team is hurtling towards a historic NWSL season, building up a 17-2-2 record with 53 points. Kansas City is in a world of its own in the NWSL standings, sitting 16 points clear of the next-closest team, the Washington Spirit.

To put that in perspective, the Orlando Pride — who had a historic season of their own last yearsecured the Shield with three weeks remaining in the 2024 season. The Pride hit a NWSL record 60 points last year; the Current only need three wins surpass that total, with five games remaining.

Orlando eventually went on to win the NWSL title, and the seemingly-unstoppable Kansas City look like they're well on their way to doing the same. The Current — who, by the way, clinched a playoff spot back on August 30 and have already secured home field advantage for the first round — will certainly be the team to beat in the postseason.

In addition, Chawinga's goal on Saturday ties her with NY/NJ Gotham FC's Esther González for the Golden Boot race. The two players have 13 goals apiece, though González has yet to play this weekend, with Gotham taking on Bay FC on Sunday.

Though Kansas City has taken the Shield so early on, the rest of the league is battling for playoff position as the regular season winds down. The Spirit, who have 37 points, are solidly in second place, but the next eight teams are within five points of each other (though three of those teams have a game in hand).

The NWSL, who is returning to a Decision Day format this season, will end on Nov. 2 with seven concurrent games to decide the final standings.
