Jonathan Toews Could Be Missing Piece in Jets' Stanley Cup Quest originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Veteran star Jonathan Toews is returning to the NHL. The three-time Stanley Cup champion has agreed to a one-year deal to join the Winnipeg Jets, as he looks to continue his career.

Toews has been out of the league since the 2023 season, and he was limited before then. The veteran was limited to 124 games after Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome kept him out of the entire 2020-21 season.

But he will be making his return, and the Jets will be getting a highly motivated player.

"I'm not satisfied the way things ended in Chicago. It's not about proving anything. It's just that there's something left in the tank, and I want to explore that. I want to go have fun, have a blast, play with passion.

“I want to be able to step away from the game having said that I've given it my all," Toews said.

The team announced the signing of Toews on social media.

Signing Toews won't change everything for the Jets, especially due to his age. But he could be the missing piece that Winnipeg needs to finally get over the hump.

After clinching the Presidents' Trophy this year, Winnipeg fell short in the postseason again. But adding a player who understands what it takes to win could be the difference maker.

Toews isn't likely to have a massive role with Winnipeg next season, but his intelligence on the ice could play a factor. In a way, he could be somewhat of a player-coach type, and the Jets could reap the benefits.

This is a great pairing and allows both sides the chance to go after a title together.
