Raimi, Paramount to Revive Jack Ryan
Source: Variety
March 19, 2008

Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with Sam Raimi to spearhead a franchise revival of Jack Ryan, the Tom Clancy-created CIA analyst character who drove four hit movies for the studio, says Variety.

Raimi would develop and direct a series of films to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Raimi's Buckaroo Entertainment partner Josh Donen.

The intention is to generate several films Raimi would develop and direct, featuring Ryan at a younger, more formative point in his career than previously depicted. One invention the studio is considering is to set the film in the present, with the action triggered by a global threat.

Paramount will draft a screenwriter to write a Ryan movie that Raimi would shoot after he completes the Universal horror film Drag Me to Hell. Paramount wants the Ryan movie ready for release in summer 2010.

Alec Baldwin originated Ryan in 1990's The Hunt for Red October. Harrison Ford played the character in 1992's Patriot Games and 1994's Clear and Present Danger. Ben Affleck played Ryan in 2002's The Sum of All Fears.

While Clancy is completing another Ryan novel, the studio hasn't read it and so hasn't decided if it will use the new book or come up with an original story. Paramount controls rights to the Ryan character, and gets first look at the new novel.

Why not an updated version of "Without Remorse"?

They had a chance to do an updated version of Sum of All Fears. Problem is, it was about a Middle-Eastern terrorist plot, so it was pretty seminal to this time period...until they wussed out and went the politically-correct, safer route of making it about some old Nazi conspiracy. Pass.

Baldwin best Ryan? I think so. Hands down. Never liked Ford in the wussified roles ... he goes too far that direction. Affleck, smart funny guy in real life, probably the worst leading male actor of the past three generations.

Who plays a new, young Ryan?

Wow, strongly disagree (except with the Affleck part). Jack Ryan IS that guy that Ford plays. He's an ordinary man put into extraordinary circumstances. Baldiwn didn't do a bad job; Ford just did a better job, IMO.

I thought Baldwin and Ford both did a good job, but The Hunt for Red October was the best movie.

"Be careful what you shoot at, Ryan. Some things in here don't react well to bullets."

Come on, Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan was pretty much like every character Harrison Ford plays. A goody-goody with very few flaws. I think he pulls off the character all right, but in my opinion Harrison Ford's acting as Jack Ryan was, well, boring. I liken it to Mel Gibson in Braveheart. Great movie, but his character goes through no changes--I still submit that Robert the Bruce was the best character in that movie. In the other Jack Ryan movies, you're looking at Connery, Sean Bean and Joaquin Al Almeida as much more interesting and better characters than Jack Ryan.

Welcome to the few people that didn't like those acting jobs, Chap.

On Jack Ryan, like I and another have said, the character is pretty much played by the book. Jack Ryan IS a goody-goody, smart guy with few flaws. His major flaw in the 'dangerous spy game' is that he isn't a real fighter. And Ford plays that to a 'T'.

In the books Ryan is a CIA analyst and history teacher.

He isn't a spy, he is a family man who is trying to peace together the puzzle.

Clark and Chavez are the bad ass operatives.

To me Matt Damon is too tied to Jason Bourne.
I think they would be better off with a lesser known actor like they did with James Bond in Casino Royale.

I agree, I read Clear and Present Danger and have seen all the movies multiple times (except for Sum of All Fears, that was a one and done), Harrison Ford IS Jack Ryan!!!

Paramount’s Jack Ryan reboot has pieced together a pretty solid cast, with Chris Pine as the titular spy and Keira Knightley, Kenneth Branagh, and Kevin Costner filling out other key roles. The latest addition is David Paymer, who’ll play a U.S. diplomat.

Chris Pine could make himself a nice career as the "Reboot King". Maybe he could do Bond, Batman and Charlie Chan when he's done. Actually, the cast looks pretty solid and for my money, you can never have too many spy thrillers.

At first I didn't like the idea--Harrison Ford IS Jack Ryan--but then I realized that Baldwin did a solid job too (I will conveniently forget Affleck here). I'm cool with the reboot and think Pine is a good choice. I just wish they would have used one of the actual books instead of making up a plot.
