The Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball head coaching search has been a roller coaster of emotions after parting ways with Fran McCaffery after 15 seasons. However, there appears to be some light approaching at the end of the tunnel.
Iowa fans endured the ups and downs of wondering if Darian DeVries, the former Drake and West Virginia head coach, was coming to Iowa City only to see him land with a fellow Big Ten member, the Indiana Hoosiers.
Despite the twists and turns of a coaching search, there appears to be a new head coach on the horizon. Hawkeye Insider's David Eickholt reports that Iowa is in the process of finalizing a deal with Drake head coach Ben McCollum.
The news comes rapidly after McCollum and Drake exited the NCAA Tournament yesterday in a loss to No. 3 seed Texas Tech in the round of 32 after upsetting sixth-seeded Missouri in the opening round.
Ben McCollum has always been a name tied to Iowa as the ties run very deep. He is an Iowa native born right in Iowa City and played at North Iowa Area Community College.
His success is evident as he led Drake to a 31-4 record this season. Before that, he was at Northwest Missouri State where he was dominant, tallying a 395-91 record and four NCAA Division II National Championships.
