The New York Jets selected senior linebacker Francisco Mauigoa in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft with the 162nd overall pick.

Mauigoa is a three-year starter in the college ranks, serving his first two years with Washington State in the Pac-12 and the following two years with Miami in the ACC.

In 13 games in 2024, Mauigoa recorded 96 tackles, 11 TFLs, 2 sacks, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, and 5 passes defensed.

The Jets have drafted physical defenders this draft with and Mauigoa fits that mold. He should come in and contribute on special teams right away, but if he finds his way onto the field on defense, he will most likely be limited to a run-specialist role that plays on first and second downs according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.

He's more of an old-school, downhill type of linebacker that will most likely compete for a depth role behind middle linebacker Jamien Sherwood.

Mauigoa could play all phases on special teams while he finds his way into the Aaron Glenn-led defense. On Day 3 of the NFL draft, getting a reliable special teamer is very valuable, especially when you're trying to reinvent a culture with a new general manager and head coach.

Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 draft.
