Before I get to the “What I’m looking for in Week 3” portion of the Insider, I wanted to point out some positive news from three young men who went out of their way to help out after football practice earlier this week.
On Monday evening, driving east on 82nd Street after Lawrence North’s football practice, Vinny Harris noticed traffic had slowed down as they approached Kroger. He quickly saw why, as two dogs were weaving through the vehicles. Behind them was teammate Cam Nicholson, who was chasing the dogs down the hill. Harris and Desmond Baskerville, riding home with Baskerville’s mother, both jumped out of the car to help Nicholson catch the wayward pups.
“We ended up having to chase them because they were so nervous,” Baskerville said. “We got them to one side of the street, then another side of the street, then they ran into the neighborhood and another guy came out with his dog and they followed.”

Later that evening, on the Nextdoor app, which is often filled with various complaints, a neighbor posted: “Thanks to a few brave Lawrence North football players, just getting out of practice, who made sure to stop traffic so dogs wouldn’t get hit and help corral them in a nearby neighbor’s yard.”
Nicholson, Harris and Baskerville, all juniors, said they just did what they thought they should in that moment.
“I feel like that’s normal, it just might not be talked about enough,” Baskerville said. “Nobody needs to be lost, so you might as well help out anyone and anything that you can.”
A good character lesson in, “it matters what you do when no one is watching.”
∎ Opening of conference play: For several conferences, the Hoosier Crossroads, Hoosier Heritage and Mid-State included, this is the first week for conference games. Class 6A No. 5 Hamilton Southeastern vs. No. 6 Avon and No. 1 Brownsburg vs. Franklin Central could be games that have major ramifications in the HCC race. Mt. Vernon at Greenfield-Central looks like the best of the HHC slate and in the always-competitive Mid-State, Decatur Central at Whiteland and 5A No. 7 Plainfield at Mooresville look like key games.
∎ New conference games: The Hoosier Legends Conference officially gets started on Friday with a bang as 2A No. 7 Triton Central plays at 3A No. 7 Tri-West. The remaining four conference teams — Beech Grove, Indian Creek, Monrovia and Speedway — do not play a conference game until next week. Greenwood and Shelbyville will join next year to complete the eight-team conference. The new Monon Conference (Cascade, Crawfordsville, Southmont, North Putnam, Frankfort, Greencastle, North Montgomery and Western Boone) gets fully underway this week with four conference games.
∎ Class 4A showdown: An early test of the balance of power in Class 4A will take place at Bishop Chatard, where the 4A top-ranked Trojans (2-0) will host No. 7 Roncalli (1-1). Chatard won both meetings last year in close games decided by a total of 10 points. With defending 4A champion New Palestine in 5A this season, both of these teams are among the favorites in the class, though only one can get through the sectional.

Three storylines to watch

Five players to watch
- Jeb Brown, Lawrence North: The senior linebacker already has 14 solo tackles (26 total), eight tackles for loss and three sacks through two weeks for the 1-1 Wildcats. Brown’s role will be crucial again this week as 6A No. 10 Lawrence North hosts 5A No. 3 East Central (2-0). The Trojans have a balanced offense led by running back Ryan Minges (293 rushing yards, four TDs) and quarterback Nolan Maple (343 passing yards, two TDs).
- Jace Cameron, Avon: Cameron was injured last year in what turned out to be a 28-10 loss to Hamilton Southeastern and missed most of the rest of the season. Cameron, now a senior, is 21-for-34 passing for 254 yards and five TDs (no interceptions) in wins over Decatur Central and Ben Davis, along with 52 rushing yards. A big test this week for the 6A sixth-ranked Orioles at No. 5 HSE.
- Chris Hill, Lebanon: The senior quarterback got it going last week in a 48-21 win over Western Boone, completing 14-for-18 through the air for 190 yards and one TD and running for 38 yards. The Tigers host a West Lafayette team that is better than its 0-2 record shows. Lebanon has not started 2-1 since 2017.
- Eric Montgomery, Scecina: The senior has been a leader on both sides of the ball for 2-0 Scecina, which plays at 2-0 Beech Grove. The Crusaders will need to be able to control the ball against the explosive Hornets. Montgomery had rushed for 167 yards and two TDs (and a TD catch) in wins over Fort Wayne Concordia and Heritage Christian. He also had 15 tackles against the Eagles.
- Charlie Rawlins, Martinsville: How about a little love for the special teams? Rawlins, a senior kicker and punter who also leads Martinsville’s soccer team with five goals and two assists, is averaging a staggering 47.6 yards on eight punts and is perfect on kicks this season (1-for-1 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points). Martinsville (0-2) hosts Greenwood (1-1).
