It didn't take long for Indianapolis Colts' defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to see why new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo earned the nickname the 'Mad Scientist' during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals.

"When I was doing my research up on him and stuff like that," Buckner said recently, "I saw that a lot of the players back in Cincy used to call him the Mad Scientist, and I found out why when I got the first install. It's been some good stuff. It gets the guys going and communicating."

A key element within Anarumo's defensive scheme is how he disguises coverages to keep quarterbacks and offenses off balance and guessing.

In the week leading up to the game, this can force opponents to watch a lot of film in order to prepare for every look, while once the game is taking place, what the quarterback sees pre-snap may not be how things look as the play is unfolding.

Like any coordinator, Anarumo has core principles that his defensive scheme is built around, but this is going to be a very malleable system as well, one that is quick to adjust based on what each opponent does, and one that is built to maximize the skill sets that the Colts have on the roster.

In addition to what Anarumo will bring schematically to the Colts' defense, there will also be an emphasis on accountability, something Buckner said there needed to be more of on this Colts defense after the 2024 season.

As Anarumo described earlier this offseason, he is going to be a "truth-teller," regardless of what kind of resume a player has put together.

"He relayed that message to the group, which I love," Buckner added. "It keeps everybody on their toes and making sure they're in their playbook and doing the right things on and off the field. It's encouraging as a competitor, as a player, when you got that type of accountability coming from a coach to now it's up to the players to relay that message amongst each other."

Along the defensive front, we will see more movement from that group, with players in different gaps, as well as a more aggressive and pressure-heavy defense overall.

Anarumo's disguising of coverages on the back end and the uncertainty that creates should benefit the pass rush, giving the defensive front additional time to get home.

"I feel like we're all on the same page and it's been some great energy," said Buckner.
