The Indianapolis Colts preseason opener ended in defeat with the team losing to Baltimore 24-16.
However, during this time of the year, it's now about wins and losses, but rather the attention is more so on individual performances that will impact playing time and what the final roster looks like.
So given what we saw in last night's game, what might the Colts' latest 53-man roster prediction look like? There were a few changes made.
Quarterbacks (3): Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones, Riley Leonard
While the unknowns around who will start Week 1 exist, we know that this trio will make up the quarterback room on the final roster.
Running backs (3): Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Goodson, DJ Giddens
Compared to the last roster prediction we did, I swapped out Khalil Herbert for Tyler Goodson. I thought it was telling that Goodson and DJ Giddens were the ones alternating series through the first half.
Wide receivers (6): Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, Alec Pierce, AD Mitchell, Anthony Gould, Ashton Dulin
No changes here. This room has looked the same all offseason.
Tight ends (4): Tyler Warren, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree, Will Mallory
Jelani Woods had two receptions for 23 yards compared to Mallory's one reception for 15 yards, but I'll stick with Mallory as TE4 given his overall body of work during training camp. He also got the earlier snaps in this game.
Offensive line (10): Bernhard Raimann, Quenton Nelson, Tanor Bortolini, Matt Goncalves, Braden Smith, Blake Freeland, Dalton Tucker, Danny Pinter, Jalen Travis, Josh Sills
I went with an extra interior offensive lineman this time around, keeping Sills. With two relatively inexperienced players in Goncalves and Tucker, having another seasoned interior lineman on the roster could be valuable.
Defensive line (9): DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Adetomiwa Adebawore, Neville Gallimore, Kwity Paye, Laiatu Latu, Samson Ebukam, Tyquan Lewis, JT Tuimoloau
The Colts usually keep 10 along the defensive line, but I went light at the tackle position, keeping just four. I thought Adebawore was able to stand out in the preseason game, not to mention that he can help on special teams. Tim Smith and Eric Johnson have to pop more. With practice squad elevations and Lou Anarumo moving defenders around more, the Colts can get by with four tackles.
Linebackers (5): Zaire Franklin, Jaylon Carlies, Segun Olubi, Cameron McGrone, Joe Bachie
Bachie made another play with an interception, but the play of the linebackers as a whole in the run game was a bit worrisome at times. With that said, I'll stick with these same five players for now.
Cornerback (6): Jaylon Jones, Charvarius Ward, Kenny Moore, JuJu Brents, Samuel Womack, Alex Johnson
With Walley out for the season, I now have Alex Johnson on the roster. He got the start against the Ravens and came away with an interception and two pass breakups.
Safeties (4): Nick Cross, Cam Bynum, Rodney Thomas, Hunter Wohler
No changes here either. This room seems to be pretty well set from a roster standpoint.
Special teams (3): Spencer Shrader, Rigoberto Sanchez, Luke Rhodes
Shrader was 3-for-4 against the Ravens, making one 50-plus yarder while missing another. Maddux Trujillo was 1-for-1 on extra points. Shrader has been the steadier kicker throughout camp.
