Michigan State football is using the transfer portal in an attempt to rebuild its roster ahead of the 2026 campaign, Pat Fitzgerald's first in East Lansing. While most position groups have been addressed, Michigan State has really ramped up their focus on the defensive line.

That focus on the defensive line recruiting has resulted in a Big Ten transfer commitment. Illinois defensive tackle transfer Eli Coenen has committed to Michigan State.

A massive 6-foot-7, 290 pound defensive tackle, Coenen is a native of Baldwin, Wisconsin. Starting his career at Bemidji State (D2 - MN), he had a breakout year during his redshirt freshman season. He used that to transfer to Illinois for a sophomore campaign.

In his one season at Iliinois, Coenen secured 12 tackles (1.5 for loss) and 1.5 sacks in 13 games. After being in a rotational role to start the year, Coenen spent the final six games in a prominent role.

Michigan State held off pushes from lowa, Nebraska and Minnesota to earn the commitment.
