From now until the season starts...many teams fall into "I have to keep this player" disease...they see the 10 - 20 new guys come to mini camp and rookie camp...and then training camp..and the coaches go..I really like this kid and we need to keep a roster spot for him...if we sign retread xyz veteran that was just cut - that means junior here will be cut..and xyz veteran is a retread anyway - why was he cut in the 1st place? Besides..if we sign retread veteran - it means some of our younger guys will not see the playing field as much.
Granted...50% of the newcomers are labelled as duds pretty quickly (including undrafted guys in the group) - but teams will make an effort to keep draft picks the first season (unless you are bobby newcombe)..and usually an undrafted guy or two..
Historically, teams have not been that active after june 1 (for starers..their is not that much out there)...For the cardinals this offseason, mabye it will be different:
1. we have so much money to spend ..and part of it we have to spend or it is doled out (part of it anyway) to existing players on the roster.
2. Our Backups at db and safety are very weak..and we could use a starter upgrade over tanner or davis (assuming one of them starts next to bryant)>
Last season - I was disappointed in what we did after June 1st..we had some cap room (not that much)..but I think we waited until after the 1st game of the season to sign fina and roundtree (mostly due to injuries)...
I am kind of torn between wanting to give young guys the chance..but this season I feel we almost have to bring in a veteran or two on defense..and graves has said as much. It would not be hard to take a roster spot from michael stone or dwyer...assuming they would even make the roster if we did not add anyone (big if).
