why would it? We are in a dome and there are no hurricanes threatening Phoenix within the next few hours.

It's over on yahoo...

Talking about bad storms in your area. It mentions Fri. unless it's referring to "last" Fri. I'll check again.

How can a hurricane threaten PHX?

EDIT: ah-ha. "Hurricaine-force" winds.

A series of fast-moving thunderstorms packing winds of up to 100 mph plowed through the Phoenix area, leaving tens of thousands without power, damaging several airliners and collapsing a brand-new college football facility.

I guess a typoon, but we still call them hurricanes. We haven't had a real one threaten us in a decade it seems.

If they are east of the International Date Line they are hurricanes.

The closest thing that I can remember was in 1997. Hurricane Nora. It was technically still a hurricane when the rain started in Yuma. The Harquahala Mtns got 11.97 inches of rain from it. Phoenix got .03.

Here is a map of the hurricanes that year.

Yeah, it was pretty bad last night but as of right now (3.30pm local) it's sunny and clear!

Last night, for those who were asleep, we had wind gusts of over 90mph confirmed. I heard stories today of over 100mph in areas.

Several roads were closed today with downed trees, etc. They mentioned on the radio this morning that ASU's new 8.5 million dollar practice facility was badly damaged in the winds. Our house, (on the other side of town from ASU not that far from the new stadium) was rocking in the wind, but we didn't lose any roof tiles and none of our trees went down, so I don't think it was nearly as bad as what the east valley received.

Another reason for the word hurricane to be mentioned: Rainfall was measured in the Phoenix area at 5 inches an hour - a rainfall rate equivalent to hurricanes.

I was pretty sad to hear that the storm popped the ASU practice bubble. It was a pretty neat looking structure.

Hopefully that's not an omen for the upcoming season.

I think you mean Rolle and Campbell. These two Hurricanes, okay former Hurricanes, will do a LOT of damage in Arizona, this year.
