Shedeur Sanders' roller coaster doesn't appear to be pulling into the station anytime soon.

It began with a positive outlook in the 2025 NFL Draft, continued with a stunning fall to the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round, and then transitioned to some positive community work. It was that same community where Sanders ran into trouble with a pair of speeding tickets and then turned some heads with his solid performance in Week 1 of the NFL preseason.

Football fans, the Browns and Sanders were all looking forward to an encore performance in Week 2 of the preseason – which came with yet another bump in the road.

Sanders suffered an oblique injury during joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday, Aug. 13. That now threatens the quarterback's availability for the remainder of the preseason, meaning it's a mystery when we'll see Sanders on the field in game action again.

Here's what to know about Sanders' injury and how long he might be out.

How long is Shedeur Sanders out?

Sanders is day-to-day with an oblique injury.

“Yeah, felt it early, I think warming up and then felt it throughout individual (drills), so took a look at it,” Stefanski told reporters on Thursday. “If it’s a right guard, you can play through that. When it’s a quarterback, you kind of need that muscle to throw."

Stefanski added that they'll see how Sanders responds to treatment, adding that they don't want to push it with him.

"So unfortunately we're going to put him down for a little bit here," Stefanski said. "We will treat it day to day and see how he responds. But we want to be smart. He's a thrower so you can't push that thing."

OPINION: Will Shedeur Sanders' performance shake up Browns' QB depth chart?

While losing the practice and game reps doesn't help Sanders' case in the team's quarterback competition, the head coach did note that there are other ways to prepare and improve off the field as well.

“I think it’s just with throwers, and pitchers, and guys that torque and twist their body, you’ve got to be really careful,” Stefanski said.

Barring something unforeseen, it appears Sanders will be held out of the Browns' second preseason game. It provides an opportunity for fellow rookie, Dillon Gabriel, to have his moment in the spotlight if the former Oregon signal caller can recover from an injury of his own.

The Browns will wrap up their preseason slate on Saturday, Aug. 23 at home against the Los Angeles Rams.
