The San Francisco 49ers won their Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks, but it came at a cost. Several of their top offensive players were injured during the game, including star tight end George Kittle.

Kittle exited the game in the first half after suffering a hamstring injury. He did not return to the contest, and the veteran tight end is now staring down a lengthy absence.

Here's what to know about Kittle's injury and who might be asked to step up in his absence.

How long is George Kittle out?

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Kittle is expected to miss at least a few weeks because of the hamstring injury he suffered in Week 1.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Kittle's timeline for return is expected to be 3-5 weeks. That would make the 31-year-old tight end a candidate for injured reserve (IR), which would force him to miss a minimum of four games.

Even if Kittle misses just three weeks, his earliest return date would project to be Thursday, Oct. 2. The 49ers play the Los Angeles Rams on "Thursday Night Football" in that Week 5 matchup.

So, regardless of whether the 49ers put Kittle on IR, fans aren't likely to see him on the field again until October at the earliest.

BROCK PURDY INJURY UPDATE: 49ers QB (shoulder, toe) uncertain for Week 2

George Kittle injury update

Kittle suffered his hamstring injury in the first half of the 49ers' Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He was quickly ruled out after exiting the field and finished the day with four catches, 25 yards and a touchdown in his limited action.

Shanahan did not provide a concrete update on Kittle's injury during his postgame news conference.

"We got to get the MRIs and everything tomorrow to find out," the 45-year-old coach said when asked about the injury's severity.

49ers TE depth chart

The 49ers have just two healthy tight ends on their 53-man roster with Kittle hurt, and three in their organization. Below is a look at the team's depth chart at the position:

  1. Luke Farrell
  2. Jake Tonges
  3. Brayden Willis (practice squad)

While Farrell now tops San Francisco's depth chart, he's more of a blocking tight end and has just 37 catches over his five-year career to date. He made one catch for four yards after Kittle exited the game.

Tonges made more of an impact as a receiver, catching all three of his targets for 15 yards and the game-winning touchdown. The 2022 undrafted free agent had never recorded a regular-season catch before Sunday's action, but he could be in line for an increased target share during Kittle's absence.
