The San Francisco 49ers might have fallen into their ideal scenario in the first round of the NFL draft.
Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams slid to the No. 11 overall pick and gave the 49ers an opportunity to find a quality player who fills one of their biggest needs.
Williams should slot in as a starter on the 49ers' defensive line right away. He'll be on the depth chart with Nick Bosa, Yetur Gross-Matos, Robert Beal, Sam Okuayinonu, Jonathan Garvin, Drake Jackson and Tarron Jackson. That's a group that badly needed an influx a talent and Williams figures to grab a starting spot opposite Bosa.
The good news with Williams is that he has the tools to be a three-down player if his pass rush skill set develops with pro coaching. He's a strong edge setter against the run which will give him opportunities for snaps out of the gate. Given the overall lack of depth in the pass rush, he should see a ton of time on passing downs either off the edge or as an interior rusher where his size and athleticism could make him a weapon for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
There were other prospects who would've fit on the 49ers' revamped defensive front, but Williams' role looks to be as a clear-cut starting defensive end.
