Former LSU baseball star and current Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Paul Skenes made his third start of his sophomore campaign in the MLB on Tuesday. He took his first recorded loss of the season and his record stands at 1-1.
The right-handed pitcher allowed five earned runs in a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Skenes threw six innings, giving up six hits and striking out seven with one walk. His ERA through three appearances in 2025 stands at 3.44.
Prior to Tuesday's loss, Skenes had allowed two earned runs and six hits through 12.1 innings. He's following up a standout 2024 season that ended with National League Rookie of the Year honors. Through 133 innings last year, Skenes posted a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts.
The Pirates selected Skenes with the first overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. It followed a season in which Skenes led LSU to the National Championship during his lone season with the Tigers.
Following two seasons at Air Force, Skenes donned the purple and gold as the team's ace. He compiled a 1.69 ERA and 13-2 record, racking up 209 strikeouts through 122.2 innings. He took Baton Rouge and the country by storm with his performances on the mound and his relationship with LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne.
