RUDYARD — The seasons for the East Jordan and Harbor Light Christian baseball teams carried high expectations of at least a regional championship trophy to accompany their district hardware.
Each team put themselves in that positon Saturday, June 7 in Rudyard, though neither made their way back across the bridge with that coveted trophy and hotel plans in East Lansing later in the week.
For East Jordan, a 7-4 Division 4 regional final loss against league foe Gaylord St. Mary turned the season in, while Harbor Light fell in the same level against Norway in a 12-2 final.
The Red Devils closed a 26-9 season, while leading early in a 2-1 game against the Snowbirds following a two-run homer from senior Korbyn Russell.
St. Mary responded in that same inning, taking back a 4-2 advantage, one they never again relinquished to the Red Devils.
EJ made a push late in the sixth with one out and two on, when Ryder Malpass reached on an error and Jacob Haley and Russell scored to pull the game to within one. A pair of outs in the inning later followed on pop-outs.
Always a tough decision, East Jordan gambled a bit with Russell not on the mound, with the Michigan State signee and 100-plus strikeout pitcher saved for a potential quarterfinal.

Malpass took the loss across 4 1/3, before Russell finally entered across the game’s final 1 2/3 innings.
Sam Kuznicki earned the win for St. Mary, going the distance in the seven-inning win.
Russell finished 2 for 4 with a double and homer, driving in two, then Malpass had two RBIs and Haley, Griffin Boyer and William Webb all singled.
It ends a strong run of success for the Red Devil program, led by seniors like Russell, Haley, Brenden Aenis, Malpass and others, many of which helped EJ earn three straight trips into regionals.
Harbor Light knew the challenge they were up against right from the start Saturday, meeting a Norway team that was coming off a state championship game trip last season.
The Knights punched their ticket to the state tournament once again, earning their seventh win in early fashion over their past 11 games, including both games Saturday.

Harbor Light plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to pull within a 3-2 game, though nine more runs followed for Norway to end the game in the fifth.
Caleb Chamberlin drove in two runs for Harbor Light, then Vaughn Henagan, Will Paulus and CJ Dubois all singled.
Daniel Urman took the loss for the Swordsmen in 1/3 of an inning, while Will Paulus went 4 1/3 innings, surrendering six earned runs, as Harbor Light was plagued by four errors on the day.
The Swordsmen, who finished 25-5, are young overall, with just Henagan graduating from the group.
Norway went on to earn a 15-0 win over St. Mary in three innings and will meet Portland St. Patrick at Michigan State’s McLain Stadium in a Division 4 semifinal on Friday, June 13.
HARBOR SPRINGS — There’s another step for the Harbor Springs softball team to take and they know it.
As a program that’s had to build itself from the ground up, the Rams have been right on schedule, maybe even ahead, of taking the steps needed to get to where they want to be.
Another brick was laid this season with a second straight Division 4 district championship, though the season closed Saturday, June 7 for a second straight year in the regional semifinal round.
Hosting Onaway, the Rams fell behind early and couldn’t build their way back in a 19-2 loss.
The loss ended a 10-21 season for Harbor Springs.
Callie Keiser finished 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored atop the lineup, then Marlie Richardson singled in a run in a 2 for 2 game, Kaylin Samyn had an RBI single and Maddy Woodward singled.
Samyn finished with the loss across 3 2/3 innings, then Hadley Binko also went 1 1/3 innings.
Onaway went on to fall in a 22-1 regional championship game against Hillman later in the day. Hillman will meet Bessemer in a Sault Ste. Marie hosted quarterfinal on Tuesday, June 10.
