With just two weeks to go until the start of training camp, the Golden State Warriors must find a resolution to their contract standoff with Jonathan Kuminga. The explosive forward is currently a restricted free agent, but has reportedly resisted all offers the Warriors have made.
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater and Shams Charania, the Warriors recently provided Kuminga with improved terms in the form of a three-year deal worth $75.2 million. However, the front office appears to be standing firm in having a team option on the final year of the contract, which continues to be a sticking point in the negotiations.
Kuminga has reportedly been keen to ensure he has some control over his future. Therefore, a team option, or waiving his no-trade clause, has been a non-starter in discussions. Nevertheless, time is running out for the two sides to find a conclusion. As such, Kuminga signing his qualifying offer continues to look like a logical end to the current standoff.
Of course, if Kuminga did sign his qualifying offer, it would be a hammer blow to Golden State. They would be facing losing him to unrestricted free agency next summer, or trading him at a discounted rate ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline. Still, Kuminga's free agency has controlled Golden State's offseason, and with the need to sign new talent to the roster growing in urgency, a resolution between Kuminga's camp and the Warriors is of the utmost importance.

"The Warriors have strengthened their effort. Late last week, Dunleavy offered Kuminga a three-year, $75.2 million deal with a team option in the third season, sources told ESPN," Charania and Slater reported. "That's $48.3 million guaranteed in the first two seasons and basically the same per year salary as fellow restricted free agent Josh Giddey, who re-signed with the Chicago Bulls for four years and $100 million...Dunleavy and the Warriors are requesting the same structure as their previous proposal on the two-year, $45 million framework -- a team option on the second season and a waiving of the inherent no-trade clause, sources said."
