The New York Giants selected Arizona Sate running back Cam Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft this past weekend. It was a pick that was met with much praise. Skattebo is a tough runner who seems to do just about everything well and can carry a team with his desire and toughness.
"One of our favorite players in the draft, just the way he plays, the mentality he plays with, the toughness, the competitiveness, the grit," Giants general manager Joe Schoen told reporters after the draft. "Good hands out of the backfield, as well. Just a darned good football player, so we were excited to get him."
Skattebo was on the Giants' radar for some time, bringing him in before the draft for a top-30 visit. That face-to-face meeting, along with Skattebo's eye-popping tape, sealed the deal for the Giants.
Head coach Brian Daboll already has a talented backfield with Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy, Jr. but he doesn't have a Skattebo. Daboll gave us a little preview of what we can expect from the rookie.
"He plays with great contact balance. He's tough as nails. You can use him a variety of ways. Pass game, he can catch, he can run routes, he can throw the ball, as you've seen on one of those, and he's got very good vision and quick feet," Daboll said.
"He's a 220-pound back who runs with power, toughness and has the type of personality that I think Joe did a great job of, along with the scouts, of bringing in guys that have a lot of toughness.
"Toughness all the way through the draft was something that we have talked about, both mental and physical. I think Skattebo has got both."
The Giants are in need of a pile-pusher on early downs and in short-yardage situations, but Skattebo sizes up as a three-down back. He gives them more depth and versatility as well as talent and attitude in their backfield.
Skattebo is a rare player that few have been able to categorize. NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah called him a "Plinko chip," referring to the unpredictable game of chance on the game show, "The Price is Right". NFL.com called Skattebo a 'carnage creator'.
Skattebo told reporters his main trait is "physicality," something he says is "contagious."
"If someone gets ran over, it hypes the other guys up and it gets them going. I'm going to continue to bring that and hopefully it feeds off on to my teammates," he said.
Skattebo is not about to allow the NFL to intimidate him. He actually feels a little disrespected, getting drafted on Day 3. He could have, and maybe should have come off the board sooner. He will use that as additional motivation to succeed, as if he needs any.
"I've been doubted my whole life, so I hate answering certain questions because there's certain things that you don't really have answers to, how other people think and stuff like that. I'm ready to play football for the New York Giants, and I'm ready to give it everything I've got. I can't wait to be there. It's going to be awesome," Skattebo said.
The Giants think so, too.

New Giants RB Cam Skattebo racked up 2300+ yards and 24 TDs last year essentially operating as the entire ASU offense.
What I find even cooler: Throughout his college career he:
- Ran the ball
- Caught the ball
- Threw multiple passes
- Punted the ball
- Played kickoff coverage
