After their coming together in Barcelona two weekends ago, all eyes will be on George Russell and Max Verstappen when they start Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix alongside each other on the front row.

There is no love lost between the British driver and his Dutch rival, something about which Russell joked after pipping Red Bull’s four-time world champion to pole position by 0.160sec.

“We’re mates so it’s all good,” Russell laughed when asked whether things could get spicy going into turn one at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Russell then added, in reference to the fact that Verstappen now has 11 penalty points on his licence, one point off a race ban, that he could afford to take more risks than his rival. “I mean, I’ve got a few more points on my licence to play with,” he said laughing. “So yeah, let’s see.”

Verstappen clearly did not find Russell’s jibes funny, cutting an irritated figure in the press conference afterwards. “He was talking about it on Thursday as well,” Verstappen said. “It’s such a waste of time, it’s so childish.”

Russell, sitting alongside him, grinned. The Briton was clearly feeling buoyant after what he called “one of the most exhilarating laps of his life”. And with good reason.

McLaren had been expected to challenge for pole, with Lando Norris topping final practice. But as so often this season, when push came to shove, the British driver made costly errors in Q3. Norris missed the chicane on his first push lap in the final top 10 shootout, then set a so-so effort on his second. After switching to a fresh set of tyres, Norris did not do nearly enough to challenge the leaders. He will start seventh, his time 0.726sec off Russell’s effort and half a second behind his team-mate Oscar Piastri, who will start third.

The day had begun with bizarre rumours – later dismissed out of hand by the Woking team – that Donald Trump might be doing a secret test in a McLaren next week. While there is no indication as yet that McLaren are sizing up the American president for Norris’s seat, there will be huge frustration that he keeps making these errors.

Norris’s engineer Will Joseph seemed almost to be coaching him through Q3, telling him to focus on his “braking references” and concentrate on his line. But it made no difference. His Q3 yips continue.

Elsewhere, the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli was fifth, while Lewis Hamilton managed to out-qualify team-mate Charles Leclerc, who got caught in traffic in Q3. Hamilton starts fifth to Leclerc’s eighth.

Williams’ encouraging weekend took a slight backwards step, meanwhile, when Alex Albon’s engine cover flew off in Q1, showering the track in debris and bringing out a red flag.

RED FLAG

— Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) June 14, 2025

In the end it was only semi-disastrous. Albon was able to get back out and eventually qualified 10th. But the red flag cost his team-mate Carlos Sainz, who was impeded by the Racing Bull of Isack Hadjar on his final push lap and ended up 17th.

He will at least start in front of Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunonda who was handed a 10-place grid penalty, plus two penalty points on his licence, for overtaking Piastri under a red flag after the Australian clipped the wall in practice.

10:31 PM BST

Norris says he hit the wall on his final lap

“Not ideal. Just too many mistakes, I hit the wall in the last lap and... yeah. I had good confidence, the car felt good today, I just made too many mistakes. We’ve clearly not had our advantage around this track comparing to normal. We’re still good, the car was quick, maybe the medium tyre was quicker at the end of qualifying. I think our pace was good but I’m a bit too far back again.”

10:21 PM BST

That is the sixth pole of Russell’s F1 career

Following Hungary in 2022 and Canada, Great Britain, Las Vegas and Qatar in 2024.

10:17 PM BST

Russell speaks after his pole

The second one in a row at this track.

“Today was awesome in front of this amazing crowd as well to get the pole. To be honest that last lap was one of the most exhilarating of my life. I got into the last corner and I was six-tenths up I was like this lap is mighty. Crossing the line and seeing I was P1 was a real surprise but I was just chuffed with it.”

On racing with Max:

“I’ve got a few more points on my licence to play with so, yeah, let’s see, let’s see.”

10:15 PM BST

Verstappen on a front-row start

“I think I felt quite good all weekend, the car was in a good window. This track is quite cool... you need to be quite efficient on the straights which I think we are, in general. I think the car was working quite well. I think we did the right thing. We’ll see what we can do tomorrow, I am already happy with what we achieved today.”

10:14 PM BST

Piastri reacts to third

“After how practice went I am pretty happy with myself. It was a nice turnaround, there is always the question do you want a medium or soft for Q3 and we went with the soft. I’ll definitely take it here.”

10:13 PM BST

Sublime from Russell

Quite frankly a bit of a mess from Lando Norris who will start seventh, four spots behind team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri. Five different teams in the top six, though.

Hamilton out-qualifies Leclerc but he is six-tenths off pole...

GEORGE RUSSELL TAKES POLE FOR THE CANADIAN GRAND PRIX!

Verstappen goes fastest by less than a tenth... but within seconds he is beaten by a stunning lap from George Russell! Into the 1:10s! On the medium tyres. What a lap!

Russell, Verstappen, Piastri, Antonelli is the top four. Norris only seventh...

10:09 PM BST

Q3 - Piastri goes fastest

A brilliant final sector but Verstappen is on a flyer! Norris is a miles away from him, 0.8sec in fact...

Verstappen and Russell still to come...

10:08 PM BST

Q3 - Leclerc makes a mistake

He sets the fastest first sector of anyone but then gets a bit of a slide on and destroys his lap. Piastri’s first sector isn’t great. Norris’s is decent but plenty of the lap left to make up time...

I am not sure Piastri is beating Verstappen’s time here but let’s see...

10:07 PM BST

Q3 - Hamilton 0.24sec off Verstappen after two sectors

He should improve here. Alonso moves into fourth but might have another lap. Hamilton then pips him by half a tenth, knocking Norris to seventh.

Leclerc starts his flying lap...

10:05 PM BST

Q3 - ⏱️ Order after the first runs

  10. HAD +1.106

I would imagine Norris went again just to get a lap on the board so it wasn’t so all or nothing on his final run. He’s still in contention for pole here, though his confidence might have taken a bit of hit.

10:03 PM BST

Q3 - Norris’s second lap is better

He makes the final chicane, at least. Crosses the line fifth. Hmmmm.

10:02 PM BST

Q3 - Mercedes starting their hot laps now

They are not going to challenge the front row here, but second row could be the target. Norris is going for another lap on the current set of tyres.

Russell moves into third... Antonelli fourth. Second row indeed.

10:01 PM BST

Q3 - Verstappen goes fastest!

Just 0.025sec faster than Piastri, but that will do!

Hamilton fifth, behind Alonso.

He misses the final chicane so his lap will not count. Leclerc is fastest with a 1:11.273... Piastri beats that by nearly half a second! Alonso into third, not too far behind Leclerc.

What has Verstappen got? He was fastest of all in the first sector...

09:57 PM BST

GREEN LIGHT!

Q3 is go.

09:55 PM BST

Who is in the fight, then?

Well, Verstappen and the two McLarens for one. Not sure about Mercedes, they appear to have gone backwards a little bit.

15. OCO

09:49 PM BST

Q2 - Antonelli into eighth...

Norris second, but behind Russell. Hadjar is trying to get into the top 10. Alonso is going for another lap and it is an improvement...

Hadjar 13th, moves to ninth. Tsunoda is out. Alonso moves from 10th to sixth. He should be through, then.

Hulkenberg cannot improve enough to get into Q3.

09:48 PM BST

Q2 - Two minutes remain

Alonso is on the medium tyres. In eighth, he is struggling a bit in this attempt. In danger of elimination? Yes. Tsunoda is looking like being eliminated here which would mean a start from the back row.

Russell goes fastest of all by 0.056sec and on the medium tyres. Alonso indeed does not improve. Tsunoda does improve, but only to ninth...

09:45 PM BST

Q2 - Leclerc improves to go fastest

Just 0.012sec faster than Leclerc. Tidy. Albon improves to go seventh.

Bearman, Colapinto, Hadjar, Ocon and Hulkenberg in the drop zone as the drivers line up at the end of the pit lane for their final runs.

09:44 PM BST

Q2 - Russell into sixth

His team-mate Antonelli eighth. Not great. Sainz, speaking in the pen, has said his weekend is “over”.

Here is the top six:

Ocon, Hulkenberg, Albon, Russell and Antonelli. The two Mercedes cars are yet to set a lap, though.

09:40 PM BST

Q2 - What about Ferrari, can they compete?

Well, Leclerc’s first lap has put him fourth and Hamilton’s fifth... but they are both around 0.3sec off Verstappen. Not awful, but not sure they will be in the fight for pole.

09:37 PM BST

Q2 - A fine lap from Verstappen

A 1:11.638 is a good lap and it is currently faster than both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, albeit by less than a tenth of a second. Franco Colapinto some 0.7sec behind Verstappen, Bearman likewise but faster than the Alpine.

09:35 PM BST

Q2 begins!

We are under way. This could be another tight one... there is the potential for one of the big guns to be knocked out if they foul up their quick laps.

Alonso was on a good lap but abandons it as he is clearly through and he also had a poor middle sector.

Sainz not happy. “Massive impeding! Massive!”. It was Hadjar who was in his way. Sainz is right. Hadjar will surely get a penalty. Hadjar did not think Sainz was on a push lap and thought he had aborted.

Russell posts the fastest middle sector but only moves up to fifth overall. What has Bearman got? Not a great final chicane but he improves to 11th. He might not be through with that lap. He is ahead of Ocon, at least.

Alonso with the fastest first sector. Albon improves to sixth from 20th. Good stuff.

Sainz improves from 20th... but only to 16th! He is out!

Colapinto fifth.

Sainz and Albon both in the drop zone now...

09:24 PM BST

Q1 - Decent lap from Alonso

Don’t think he’s in the fight for pole but he could do with a hefty points haul. He has at least broken his duck. Norris crosses the line and moves from 12th to first with a 1:11.826 which is just over a tenth faster than his McLaren team-mate. No further investigation for Albon. Hamilton third, not too much further back.

Q1 - ❗Bad news for Yuki Tsunoda❗

Not only is he in 16th and in the drop zone, he will take a 10-place grid penalty and two penalty points on his licence for overtaking under red-flag conditions in FP3...

Oof. Yuki Tsunoda handed a 10-place grid penalty tomorrow, plus two penalty points on his licence, for overtaking Oscar Piastri under a red flag after the Australian clipped the wall in practice earlier. Tsunoda claimed he was worried about collecting debris if he stayed behind the McLaren, but stewards determined he could have followed at a safe distance. Instead, “Telemtry showed that Car 81 [Piastri] was travelling at 86kph when Car 22 [Tsunoda] overtook at a speed of 171kph”.

Norris could do with making up some ground on Piastri. Of course, it is a long season but the lead has grown since the season-opening race in Australia. If Piastri continues to struggle, it could be a good opportunity. That said, other teams look a bit closer to McLaren than in previous rounds.

A few brushes and clunks on the ‘wall of champions’ in FP3

I wouldn’t rule out someone fully crashing into it in practice. This is a track I always associate with crashes. Quite possibly because the first Canadian Grand Prix I saw was in 1998 when this happened to Benetton’s Alexander Wurz on the first lap.

There may not be a better chance for Jenson Button to add his name to the prestigious winners’ list of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, when he starts Saturday’s gruelling race from the front row. And, it turns out, this may be his last chance.

Twenty-seven years after Button won the British Formula Ford Championship, the first title of an illustrious career that took him to the top of the sport, the 45-year-old is finally ready to start easing back.

“I’ve got so many things going on and I just can’t fit it all in,” Button tells Telegraph Sport from the Circuit de la Sarthe, where he will launch his fourth attempt to win Le Mans. “Something’s got to give.”

FP3 recap: Norris leads Leclerc

McLaren’s Lando Norris pipped Charles Leclerc to fastest time in third and final practice for the Canadian Grand Prix - Reuters/Mathieu Belanger

Lando Norris landed a boost ahead of qualifying for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix by finishing fastest in final practice.

The British driver bemoaned McLaren’s worst day of the season so far at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday after he trailed George Russell.

But Norris soared to the top of the time sheets in the concluding running prior to qualifying, finishing 0.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with Russell third.

Norris trails McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in the championship standings by 10 points. However, Piastri has struggled for speed this weekend and he sustained damage to his McLaren when he hit the barrier at the so-called Wall of Champions.

Piastri was left with a right-rear puncture before he stopped for repairs. The Australian’s mistake cost him just eight minutes of track time but he finished in eighth place, seven tenths off Norris’ pace.

Lewis Hamilton was fourth, 0.251 sec behind Norris with Max Verstappen fifth and Fernando Alonso sixth in his Aston Martin.

FP3 - Leclerc with the fastest first sector

Piastri stays eighth fastest in the McLaren, a long way off his team-mate. Seven-tenths in fact. Leclerc with a decent enough middle sector on old soft tyres. Could he get into the top three here? Yes he can! Second, just 0.078sec off Norris. Qualifying could be interesting again...

06:28 PM BST

FP3 - Norris going faster

Well, he was in the first sector but then loses bags of time in the middle sector. Meanwhile, Tsunoda has been noted for a red flag infringement. It will almost certainly be a grid penalty at least if he is found guilty.

Norris does not improve his lap time. Doesn’t look like Verstappen will, either.

06:27 PM BST

FP3 - Russell stays second

0.151sec off Norris’s ultimate pace. Hamilton, for once, looking the faster of the two Ferrari drivers this weekend. He took his first win in Formula One on this track, just the 18 years ago.

Tsunoda has come out of the garage, which is good to see. He is still last, which isn’t, at least for him.

06:24 PM BST

FP3 - Into the final 10 minutes

Gasly gets stuck in traffic in the middle of the track. He says he’s “really ------ off” with the drivers messing around. Colapinto’s fault because he got in the way of Hamilton, too.

06:22 PM BST

FP3 - Not sure what is up with Tsunoda

The Red Bull driver is down in 20th and 0.7sec off the pace of the next fastest man, Franco Colapinto. He has only done seven laps, though, so there must be a problem somwhere.

06:21 PM BST

FP3 - What has Verstappen got?

It’s a time of 1:12.210, which is fast enough for fourth 0.411sec off Norris’s (who recently moved into first) ultimate pace.

06:19 PM BST

FP3 - Bearman slides into the wall

06:09 PM BST

FP3 - Piastri is back out there after his crash

Good to see. He is currently down in 14th.

Norris picks up a big slipstream from Bearman down the back straight but does not improve his time. A big moment and nearly a big crash between Bearman and Fernando Alonso at that some moment.

Alonso moved over on Bearman once Norris had passed and the Haas had to go onto the grass to avoid a crash...

FP3 - Leclerc still leads under the red flag

Before that crash Lewis Hamilton had sneaked up to third.

We are now back racing. Or driving, at least. 31 mins remain.

FP3 - RED FLAG

Is this because Piastri is going slowly? Or debris on the track? He should be able to make it back but the rear-right tyre is starting to damage his car. Nico Hulkenberg spins and hits the wall too.

Now Hulkenberg's into the barriers at the final corner!

Piastri makes it back... some damage to the rear wing, Sky Sports’ Ted Kravitz reports.

FP3 - Piastri clips the wall!

At the final corner, Piastri clunks the wall on the outside of the chicanewith his rear right and has a puncture at least. Is there more than that? Possibly...

Not an enormous hit, but big enough. He will limp back to the pit lane. Or he should...

FP3 - Colapinto nearly into the wall

Goes in too fast into the chicane and just catches it out of the corner... he needs a big performance this weekend.

It’s Franco Colapinto. He is followed by the two Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.

Derek Warwick suspended from stewarding over ‘unauthorised’ Verstappen comments

You must be registered for see images attach

Derek Warwick, the former Formula One driver, has been suspended from his role as a steward at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix after making “unauthorised media comments” about Max Verstappen.

The development has revived the debate around the extent to which driver stewards should be allowed to give comment and opinion outside of their FIA roles, and whether that constitutes a potential conflict of interest.

Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle leapt to the defence of his friend and former rival on Friday night, describing Warwick, 70, as a “salt of the earth genuine guy” and saying he would defend him “until my last breath”.

04:39 PM BST

Good afternoon

Welcome to our coverage for third and final practice for the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix from the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. The races at this track are not quite what they used to be, but that is largely because of the cars rather than the circuit. That does not mean that it does not provide a challenge – it still very much does – but the thrills and spills of a couple of decades ago are no longer so frequent.

How are things shaping up this weekend? Well, Lando Norris of McLaren was not so enthusiastic about his team’s performance in two Friday practice sessions. He called it the “worst Friday of the year”.

“A little bit off the pace compared to some of the others, and maybe it didn’t look it at the end but [it was] just difficult to ever put a lap together and be consistent – I did one good lap the whole session. We have some work to do.”

That is not to say he was distant. Far from it. Norris was the fastest McLaren and only second behind the Mercedes of George Russell, and only by 0.028sec. The second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli was third 0.288sec adrift of Russell followed by Alexander Albon, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton rounding out the top eight.

Charles Leclerc missed the entirety of FP2 after crashing in first practice, so he will be keen to make up for lost time in FP3. Lance Stroll saved his crash until FP2, only managing two laps. Again, the home favourite (he’s not exactly a hero, is he?) will want to put in plenty of laps in what looks to be an improved Aston Martin.

FP3 is under way in about 45 minutes and we will be here for all of the live action as well as that for qualifying later, which starts at 9pm.
