George Russell celebrates pipping Max Verstappen to pole position at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix - Mark Sutton /Formula 1 via Getty Images

After their coming together in Barcelona two weekends ago, all eyes will be on George Russell and Max Verstappen when they start Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix alongside each other on the front row.
There is no love lost between the British driver and his Dutch rival, something about which Russell joked after pipping Red Bull’s four-time world champion to pole position by 0.160sec.
“We’re mates so it’s all good,” Russell laughed when asked whether things could get spicy going into turn one at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Russell then added, in reference to the fact that Verstappen now has 11 penalty points on his licence, one point off a race ban, that he could afford to take more risks than his rival. “I mean, I’ve got a few more points on my licence to play with,” he said laughing. “So yeah, let’s see.”
Verstappen clearly did not find Russell’s jibes funny, cutting an irritated figure in the press conference afterwards. “He was talking about it on Thursday as well,” Verstappen said. “It’s such a waste of time, it’s so childish.”
Russell, sitting alongside him, grinned. The Briton was clearly feeling buoyant after what he called “one of the most exhilarating laps of his life”. And with good reason.

McLaren had been expected to challenge for pole, with Lando Norris topping final practice. But as so often this season, when push came to shove, the British driver made costly errors in Q3. Norris missed the chicane on his first push lap in the final top 10 shootout, then set a so-so effort on his second. After switching to a fresh set of tyres, Norris did not do nearly enough to challenge the leaders. He will start seventh, his time 0.726sec off Russell’s effort and half a second behind his team-mate Oscar Piastri, who will start third.
The day had begun with bizarre rumours – later dismissed out of hand by the Woking team – that Donald Trump might be doing a secret test in a McLaren next week. While there is no indication as yet that McLaren are sizing up the American president for Norris’s seat, there will be huge frustration that he keeps making these errors.
Norris’s engineer Will Joseph seemed almost to be coaching him through Q3, telling him to focus on his “braking references” and concentrate on his line. But it made no difference. His Q3 yips continue.
Elsewhere, the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli was fifth, while Lewis Hamilton managed to out-qualify team-mate Charles Leclerc, who got caught in traffic in Q3. Hamilton starts fifth to Leclerc’s eighth.
Williams’ encouraging weekend took a slight backwards step, meanwhile, when Alex Albon’s engine cover flew off in Q1, showering the track in debris and bringing out a red flag.
RED FLAG

— Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) June 14, 2025
In the end it was only semi-disastrous. Albon was able to get back out and eventually qualified 10th. But the red flag cost his team-mate Carlos Sainz, who was impeded by the Racing Bull of Isack Hadjar on his final push lap and ended up 17th.
He will at least start in front of Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunonda who was handed a 10-place grid penalty, plus two penalty points on his licence, for overtaking Piastri under a red flag after the Australian clipped the wall in practice.
10:31 PM BST
Norris says he hit the wall on his final lap
“Not ideal. Just too many mistakes, I hit the wall in the last lap and... yeah. I had good confidence, the car felt good today, I just made too many mistakes. We’ve clearly not had our advantage around this track comparing to normal. We’re still good, the car was quick, maybe the medium tyre was quicker at the end of qualifying. I think our pace was good but I’m a bit too far back again.”
10:21 PM BST
That is the sixth pole of Russell’s F1 career
Following Hungary in 2022 and Canada, Great Britain, Las Vegas and Qatar in 2024.

10:17 PM BST
Russell speaks after his pole
The second one in a row at this track.
“Today was awesome in front of this amazing crowd as well to get the pole. To be honest that last lap was one of the most exhilarating of my life. I got into the last corner and I was six-tenths up I was like this lap is mighty. Crossing the line and seeing I was P1 was a real surprise but I was just chuffed with it.”
On racing with Max:
“I’ve got a few more points on my licence to play with so, yeah, let’s see, let’s see.”
10:15 PM BST
Verstappen on a front-row start
“I think I felt quite good all weekend, the car was in a good window. This track is quite cool... you need to be quite efficient on the straights which I think we are, in general. I think the car was working quite well. I think we did the right thing. We’ll see what we can do tomorrow, I am already happy with what we achieved today.”
10:14 PM BST
Piastri reacts to third
“After how practice went I am pretty happy with myself. It was a nice turnaround, there is always the question do you want a medium or soft for Q3 and we went with the soft. I’ll definitely take it here.”
10:13 PM BST
Sublime from Russell
Quite frankly a bit of a mess from Lando Norris who will start seventh, four spots behind team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri. Five different teams in the top six, though.
Hamilton out-qualifies Leclerc but he is six-tenths off pole...

GEORGE RUSSELL TAKES POLE FOR THE CANADIAN GRAND PRIX!

Russell, Verstappen, Piastri, Antonelli is the top four. Norris only seventh...
10:09 PM BST
Q3 - Piastri goes fastest
A brilliant final sector but Verstappen is on a flyer! Norris is a miles away from him, 0.8sec in fact...
Verstappen and Russell still to come...
10:08 PM BST
Q3 - Leclerc makes a mistake
He sets the fastest first sector of anyone but then gets a bit of a slide on and destroys his lap. Piastri’s first sector isn’t great. Norris’s is decent but plenty of the lap left to make up time...
I am not sure Piastri is beating Verstappen’s time here but let’s see...
10:07 PM BST
Q3 - Hamilton 0.24sec off Verstappen after two sectors
He should improve here. Alonso moves into fourth but might have another lap. Hamilton then pips him by half a tenth, knocking Norris to seventh.
Leclerc starts his flying lap...

Q3 - Norris’s second lap is better
He makes the final chicane, at least. Crosses the line fifth. Hmmmm.
10:02 PM BST
Q3 - Mercedes starting their hot laps now
They are not going to challenge the front row here, but second row could be the target. Norris is going for another lap on the current set of tyres.
Russell moves into third... Antonelli fourth. Second row indeed.

What has Verstappen got? He was fastest of all in the first sector...

Hulkenberg cannot improve enough to get into Q3.

Alonso is on the medium tyres. In eighth, he is struggling a bit in this attempt. In danger of elimination? Yes. Tsunoda is looking like being eliminated here which would mean a start from the back row.

Oof. Yuki Tsunoda handed a 10-place grid penalty tomorrow, plus two penalty points on his licence, for overtaking Oscar Piastri under a red flag after the Australian clipped the wall in practice earlier. Tsunoda claimed he was worried about collecting debris if he stayed behind the McLaren, but stewards determined he could have followed at a safe distance. McLaren’s Lando Norris pipped Charles Leclerc to fastest time in third and final practice for the Canadian Grand Prix - Reuters/Mathieu Belanger
Lando Norris landed a boost ahead of qualifying for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix by finishing fastest in final practice.
The British driver bemoaned McLaren’s worst day of the season so far at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday after he trailed George Russell.
But Norris soared to the top of the time sheets in the concluding running prior to qualifying, finishing 0.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with Russell third.
Norris trails McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in the championship standings by 10 points. However, Piastri has struggled for speed this weekend and he sustained damage to his McLaren when he hit the barrier at the so-called Wall of Champions.
Piastri was left with a right-rear puncture before he stopped for repairs. The Australian’s mistake cost him just eight minutes of track time but he finished in eighth place, seven tenths off Norris’ pace.
Lewis Hamilton was fourth, 0.251 sec behind Norris with Max Verstappen fifth and Fernando Alonso sixth in his Aston Martin.

Not an enormous hit, but big enough. He will limp back to the pit lane. Or he should...

FP3 - Colapinto nearly into the wall
Goes in too fast into the chicane and just catches it out of the corner... he needs a big performance this weekend.

Derek Warwick suspended from stewarding over ‘unauthorised’ Verstappen comments

Derek Warwick, the former Formula One driver, has been suspended from his role as a steward at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix after making “unauthorised media comments” about Max Verstappen.
The development has revived the debate around the extent to which driver stewards should be allowed to give comment and opinion outside of their FIA roles, and whether that constitutes a potential conflict of interest.
Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle leapt to the defence of his friend and former rival on Friday night, describing Warwick, 70, as a “salt of the earth genuine guy” and saying he would defend him “until my last breath”.

Good afternoon
Welcome to our coverage for third and final practice for the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix from the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. The races at this track are not quite what they used to be, but that is largely because of the cars rather than the circuit. That does not mean that it does not provide a challenge – it still very much does – but the thrills and spills of a couple of decades ago are no longer so frequent.
How are things shaping up this weekend? Well, Lando Norris of McLaren was not so enthusiastic about his team’s performance in two Friday practice sessions. He called it the “worst Friday of the year”.
“A little bit off the pace compared to some of the others, and maybe it didn’t look it at the end but [it was] just difficult to ever put a lap together and be consistent – I did one good lap the whole session. We have some work to do.”
That is not to say he was distant. Far from it. Norris was the fastest McLaren and only second behind the Mercedes of George Russell, and only by 0.028sec. The second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli was third 0.288sec adrift of Russell followed by Alexander Albon, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton rounding out the top eight.
Charles Leclerc missed the entirety of FP2 after crashing in first practice, so he will be keen to make up for lost time in FP3. Lance Stroll saved his crash until FP2, only managing two laps. Again, the home favourite (he’s not exactly a hero, is he?) will want to put in plenty of laps in what looks to be an improved Aston Martin.
FP3 is under way in about 45 minutes and we will be here for all of the live action as well as that for qualifying later, which starts at 9pm.
