Getting this one up early, because the results in games elsewhere, and in other time zones, will also be pivotal to the D-backs’ fortunes. They are effectively one game back of both the Reds and the Mets going into play. At 3:40 pm Arizona time, the Reds will get under way in Cincinnati, facing the Pirates in the second game of their series. Then at 5:05 pm, the Mets will start their game in Wrigley Field, after pulling off quite the comeback of their own yesterday against the Cubs. That allowed them, for now, to retake possession of the final NL wild-card, and control their own destiny. Hopefully the Cubs will stop sucking. They’ve been useless of late, losing to the Reds as well.

So figured we might want to get in a little scoreboard watching this afternoon, while we wait for the D-backs to take on the Dodgers at Chase. A victory here (or tomorrow) would be particularly significant, since it would give Arizona the season series over Los Angeles. It’s currently 6-5 in our favor, with two games left to play. It has been a while since the Diamondbacks prevailed there. Here’s the season series results each year:

  • 2025: 6-5 (so far)
  • 2024: 6-7
  • 2023: 5-8
  • 2022: 5-14
  • 2021: 3-16
  • 2020: 2-8
  • 2019: 8-11
  • 2018: 11-8

Things have definitely been going in the right direction since the new schedule came out. Arizona got absolutely creamed by Los Angeles from 2020-22, with a combined record of 10-38. But they almost pulled out the season series last year, going into the final game on September 2 tied at 6-6, before rolling over in an 11-6 loss. The all-time best mark was, of all seasons, in 2005, when the Diamondbacks were 13-5. Because that wasn’t a very good team generally, going 77-85 for the year. They clearly had the Dodgers’ number though. No surprise as to the worst ones: 2004 and 2021, the two worst seasons in franchise history, both saw a dismal 3-16 record.
