Padres out to stop Diamondbacks, nemesis Greinke
When Zack Greinke walked off the mound with a trainer in the eighth inning last Wednesday in Phoenix, there was an audible gasp from Arizona Diamondbacks fans.

Greinke felt a little tug in his side. And there was really no need to press on in a game Arizona would go on to win 11-1. Through 7 2/3 innings, the Diamondbacks' ace had held the Pittsburgh Pirates scoreless on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

So, he called it a night. Call it a precaution.

My wish was answered. Dyson is not being benched vs. the lefty.

But he has been dropped from leadoff to 7th in the batting order.

What is that called? A left-handed compliment? :)

I would have left him at leadoff. And Jones flies out batting there instead.

Three fly outs. So much for manufacturing runs. C'mon, guys.

EDIT: I see that Flores is on the disabled list and Vargas is not back up yet,
so keeping Marte at 2B and Dyson in CF was a necessity, not a choice.

And Dyson with our first hit to start the 3rd, with the Catcher behind him.

What will it take to show Torey that he can hit lefties?

We need a good sacrifice to bring up Greinke (one of our best hitters) with
a runner in scoring position. Nope, Murphy pops up. A wasted out.

Greinke with a sacrifice. But there are now two outs. Jones flies out.

Lift .. lift .. lift. It is killing the D-backs. I cannot understand how it
continues. Do the D-backs want to win, or what?

Very few baseball fans pray for the pitcher to come to the plate. Oddly sad although I understand what you are saying

Please tell me they aren't employing that darn uppercut swing again.

It is windy and cold (for San Diego) and now the rain has begun.

The sky is purple!

And they predict rain for the day game tomorrow.

That could cost two makeup games for later on.

Steve said they may have to close the roof. :)

Well, Escobar, who I believe leads the D-backs in HR's and RBI's,
hits one a mile through the wind to LF and it is 1-0.

Apparently, the rain is holding up for awhile. C'mon, bottom of
the 5th.

Greinke strikes out the Padres power hitter, Reyes, for the 2,500th of his regular season career.

It was on this date that Randy struck out his 3,500th, but that was then and this is now.

And Greinke walks Machado. Only his 9th given up this season.

John Ryan Murphy with a solo HR in the 5th. All or nothing.

We lead 2-0. And Greinke follows with a 2-out bunt single.

Greinke pitching a 1-hit shutout after 5.

And Peralta left the game, but they are not saying why.

Swihart playing LF. I believe the rest of the bench are
all Catchers, until Vargas arrives.

Why does it seem like the Padres feel like they are winning the world series the last two games? The fans and players are going so crazy.

Oh, no. Greinke gives up a 2-out single to Machado for an RBI.
Last at-bat he pitched around him for a walk.

And follows with a 2-run HR. 3-2 Padres just like that. Sheist!

Why couldn't rain come after 5? 'Shows ya how the D-backs
hitters have disappeared when our best hope is rain.

Second night in a row with a 2-run homer by the Padres in
the 6th inning.

Sad how offense is no where around. Only scoring on homeruns.

Ahmed has to be the number 1 hitter in the league that hits into double plays. He is always hitting into them.

There was a base open when Machado was up in the 6th. Why in the world did Greinke pitch to him???

He had just struck out Reyes, their hottest slugger.

He had pitched around Machado on his previous at-bat.

I guess that made Greinke feel confident this time.

He is our ace. I'm not going to second guess him.
