The game has started out as it promised to be. A pitchers duel.

The Padres Paddack threw 10 pitches and Weaver 15 and the
sides were retired in order.

Right now, with Paddack having a lower ERA than Weaver, and
playing at San Diego, the Padres seem to have the advantage.

And Paddack retires the side in order again in the 2nd inning.
He is good!

Hey, the first two hitters single for the D-backs in the 3rd -- the 7th
& 8th hitters.

Now runners on first & 3rd with one out and the top of the order up.

The word is that Paddack is on a strict pitch count following Tommy
John Surgery. That makes things look better for the D-backs tonight.

And a force out leads to a run for the D-backs.

Marte singles Dyson to 3B with two outs.

BTW, Steve says that Paddack is on a 90 pitch count limit.

He's thrown 60 in four innings. That means probably two
more innings.

Franmil Reyes with a 2-run HR in the 6th and the Padres lead 2-1.

Paddack is done after six.

Archie is throwing in the bullpen in the top of the 7th. No comment!

This has to be the worst team ever with a runner on third and less than two out.

Even worse than runner on third, they leave the bases loaded (all walked) and are still down 2-1.

Archie is in to pitch the 7th and got the umps to have the ground in front of the pitching rubber filled in.

'Hope that helps.

Archie with a 1-2-3 inning and he threw a good curve in the inning.

I guess having the mound in front of the rubber built back up helped.

Maybe MLB should do that automatically when they smooth out the
infield dirt late in the game.

Too good to be true in Archie's 7th.

Puts runners on 2nd & 3rd in the 8th and gives an intentional walk to Machado
to load the bases, then he's outta there.

It's now up to Chafin. And a three slider strikeout. Whew!

Swihart continues to not impress.

Steve said the Padres are going back to brown uniforms next season.

I like it! I recently changed the wallpaper on my Smart phone from
blue to various shades of brown.

Oh, and BTW, Yates retires the side in the top of the 9th with two
strikeouts and the D-backs lose 2-1.

Another instance where Hazen needs to force Lovullo's hand...
How so. It wasn't Torey who put Swihart on the roster.

Who among us did not expect that Swiharg would be a major drop in offense when playing in place of Peralta or Jones?

It's Torey who keeps playing him despite his awful production (or lack thereof), likely due to the Boston connection.

Not exactly. It is baseball's approach to "scheduled days off" for its regular starters.

Imagine Ted Williams or Willie Mays or Joe DiMaggio or Hank Aaron being told that they would not
start every game. Or, as players like Roy Campanella said, "Let's play two." It was not unusual
for Campy and his peers to catch every inning of double-headers.

I wonder what role the Players Union has played in this. As well as eliminating complete games
for starting pitchers. Baseball is coddling its players. It is not right to single out Torey.

There are other players on the 40-man roster available to play instead of Swihart.
