This is why I want the Suns to add another point guard. If Payne should not work out, the Suns only have Moore, Galloway and Carter behind Chris Paul. Notice I have not mentioned Devin Booker playing point guard although he probably will on special occasions this season.
If not the Suns might want to keep the 15th roster spot open for a move later in the season if someone gets bought out or perhaps a minor trade.
Any time that Booker plays with Carter, Galloway, or Moore (and no Payne or Paul) he will be the de facto PG. Booker “playing PG” is not an issue in and of itself; the issue was one of a lack of creative perimeter talent when “Point Book” was coined that had the unfortunate consequence of conflating the teams’ poor performance with some commentary on Booker’s lack of creative ability.
The last three roster spots shouldn’t be thought of as “guys that will play minutes”. Even an 11 man rotation is pushing it. The Suns should prioritize guys that will bust ass in practice and be consummate teammates. Sometimes those guys (Carter) turn into fringe rotation guys, and they almost always cause more good than bad.
I agree with a lot of this where the other guard is sort of a combo guard. This can work. The reason I stay away from the topic of Booker playing point guard is because it has given rise to a lot of heated discussions on the forum. Still, I never want Booker to be forced into a situation where he has to be the primary ball distributor.
Define “a situation”. If Booker has to run offense for 10mpg that is obviously fine and probably optimal.
It's nice to have options. The Suns haven't been in the position of having a quality bench down to the 14th player for a long time.
Invariably players beyond the 11 man rotation will be pressed into action. It happens every season. That's why players like Diallo and Okobo were pressed into action last season. Injuries and COVID-19 could cause players to miss games. I've learned to never take those end of the bench spots lightly.
They’re not going to add another name player, not for a spot that is essentially a practice squad player.
That guy was other-worldly for us in that run about 6 years ago. Turned out to be the best year of his career by far.
Johnathan Motley just given a camp contract. Energy hustle guy. We could do worse with that 15th roster spot.
