There’s something special about baseball on Mother’s Day — the pink bats, the warm spring sun dappling the infield, and the players honoring the women who first placed a glove in their hands. At Citi Field on Sunday, the setting was just right for something special. And Francisco Lindor, the Mets’ magnetic shortstop with the flair for big moments, delivered a performance worthy of the holiday.
After coming up just short the night before — Brett Baty nearly played the hero before the Cubs eked out a one-run win — the Mets responded with resolve. Sunday’s game wasn’t just about redemption; it was about momentum, and it was Lindor who seized it.

The Mets and Cubs were locked in a 2-2 tie entering the bottom of the eighth when Lindor stepped to the plate. With a 3-1 count against Cubs reliever Porter Hodge, the shortstop did what leaders do: he took matters into his own hands.
Lindor launched his ninth home run of the season, a decisive blast that gave the Mets a one-run lead and ignited the Citi Field crowd.
Pete Alonso followed with a key insurance run after doubling and scoring on a Mark Vientos RBI single. Then came the exclamation point: Brandon Nimmo crushed a two-run homer off Cubs right-hander Gavin Hollowell, effectively sealing a 6-2 win for New York.
Lindor delivered an emotional Mother's Day message after the win.
"Today I just wanted to make sure I did something for the boys... then the emotions just came out," he said. "I definitely had my mom in my mind and my sisters, my wife. Definitely had them in my mind."
Lindor’s resurgence has been one of the most compelling developments of the Mets’ season. After a slow start, he has found his rhythm at the plate, crediting long, detailed sessions with the team’s hitting coaches for tailoring his approach in the batter’s box.
His leadoff home run in Friday night’s 6-2 series-opening win was a sign of things to come.
