Former Sean Payton Saints linebacker floated as trade idea for Denver Broncos originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Denver Broncos had a weakness at the inside linebacker position this offseason and they addressed that immediately in free agency, signing former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw to a three-year contract.
It was arguably the most exciting move the team made this offseason. The Broncos were going to have an enforcer. They were going to get a hard-hitting, no-nonsense man in the middle. Only one problem... Greenlaw has yet to play a snap for the team.
The Broncos held out hope he could join them in Week 3 or 4, but when that was taken off the table, he was placed on injured reserve on September 20 and won't be eligible to play until Week 7. Throw in the fact that Alex Singleton has struggled and the team has a major hole at the position.
While taking a look at every team's biggest trade need, Kevin Patra of NFL.com suggests that the Broncos take a look at New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis.
"Big-ticket free-agent addition Dre Greenlaw hasn’t been able to play this season. Alex Singleton struggled coming off the ACL injury that prematurely ended his 2024 -- until Monday's win over the Bengals, when he started to feel like himself again. Was that a sign he’s turned a corner, or just what he should do against a bad opponent? Some insurance wouldn’t be bad. Former Sean Payton charge Demario Davis would make for an interesting addition to an already physical defense", wrote Patra.
It's certainly an interesting idea. Davis plays for the currently winless Saints, a team that could be looking to move any valuable option it can ahead of this year's trade deadline, scheduled for November 4.
Davis was originally a third-round pick of the New York Jets in 2012. He had two stints with them and also played for the Cleveland Browns. But he has been in New Orleans since 2018, when Sean Payton was still the team's head coach. Payton has shown a penchant for bringing in any former players he had in New Orleans as he can, and Davis would fit that bill.
Because he is 36 years old, the Broncos could likely get him at a very affordable rate, adding a talented and experienced hand to lean on as the team hopefully pursues a playoff spot toward the end of the season.

For his career, Davis has racked up over 1,400 tackles to go along with 44.5 sacks and four interceptions in 131 games.
