The Brooklyn Nets have had plenty of coaches come through the organization over the years and some of those coaches have went on to do great things in the NBA. For example, Kenny Atkinson went from coaching Brooklyn to leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to one of their best regular-season performances. One of Atkinson's assistants could be a head coach in the league next season.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Phoenix Suns have narrowed their head-coaching search to two candidates, Cavaliers associate coach Johnnie Bryant and assistant coach Jordan Ott. Ott not only was Atkinson's assistant in Cleveland, but he used to be Atkinson's assistant when he was coaching the Nets from 2016 to 2020.
Ironically enough, one of the candidates for the Suns' head-coaching role was Nets assistant coach Steve Hetzel, according to various reports, before he was out of consideration once the candidate field was cut down recently. Charania also reported that Bryant and Ott will meet with Phoenix owner Mat Ishbia later this week so Ott will get a decision in less than one week from Monday.
When Ott first came to the Nets ahead of the 2016-17 season, he was the manager of advance scouting while also doubling as the assistant coach for Atkinson. Since leaving Brooklyn after the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, Ott has been an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, coach for 3SSB Select, and most recently assistant coach for the Cavaliers this past season.
What may help Ott get his first head-coaching gig in the NBA may be due to a decision he made years ago when he decided to attend Michigan State University for college. Ishbia is also a Michigan State alum and others have implied that Ishbia may give favor to someone that used to attend Michigan State because of how dedicated Ishbia is to the school via his wallet and his words.
