A Sanford man is suing his former employer, the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Town of Siler City, and the Town of Apex for religious discrimination.

Manuel Torres said he is deeply religious and his beliefs prohibit him from being alone with a woman who is not his wife.

Evangelicals sometimes call the practice The Billy Graham Rule. Vice President Mike Pence is a strong proponent of that philosophy.

According to the court document, Torres, who is married and serves as a deacon at East Sanford Baptist Church, was "ordered to train a female deputy, which would require he spend significant periods of time alone in his patrol car with the female officer trainee."

When he asked for accommodations to be made for religious reasons, he said the requests were "alternately granted and denied."

@82CardsGrad - I consider this a form of misogyny. And it predates the "Me Too" movement.

    It stifles equality for women.

If he is too rapey to be around women, I can respect the request but as an employer, I am not going to eggshell around because he is too rapey, id rather just fire him.

And, seriously, if you can't control yourself then you should just go play in traffic.

I won’t pretend to get into the head of this guy... however, I can say that I have met a couple of Christians who try to conduct themselves in this manner, and it has ZERO to do with their de-valuing of women. This position - not being alone with women, is simply a matter of respect for his wife and the effort to not place himself in a position where he can ever be accused of misconduct.
It is a hyper-strict expression of their faith and one that I do not adhere to myself. However, I can respect a man who chooses to live his life this way. In particular, the two men that I happen to know who attempt to adhere to this practice, are two of the kindest, most respectful of women men I know. They each are married to very successful women and each have daughters who are also career oriented and successful in their own right.

I think the presumption of misogyny here could be a misguided viewpoint...

As I said to Jon, I won’t pretend to know exactly what this dude is thinking... but, if his mindset is similar to other men I know who attempt to live out their faith in this way, his position has nothing to do with his worry about his self-control...
Or, maybe this guy really doesn’t trust HIMSELF and therefore, it’s really not a situation where he is trying to live in accordance to his faith...

It's not always a disrespect thing for sure but I would also let someone go if I had to eggshell about who they can work with. If you cause limitations, you are a liability.

Exactly, he has a right to his faith and belief, but they had a right to fire him because he can't perform the duties of his job if he refuses to be alone ever with a woman. What if he had to counsel a woman as part of his job?
