Former University of Louisville basketball player Russ Smith is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol after he was stopped by Louisville Metro Police in the Highlands just after midnight June 8.

Police reported observing Smith's vehicle making a U-turn on Baxter Avenue across multiple lanes, including a crosswalk, near the intersection with Highland Avenue. An officer spotted an expired tag from 2022 on the license plate of Smith's vehicle, according to an arrest citation.

The officer reported smelling a "strong odor of alcoholic beverages" from Smith's breath when they first approached him. Smith, according to the arrest citation, said he had consumed "two bourbon pours neat" prior to driving.

According to an arrest citation, Smith failed the officer's sobriety test and a blood alcohol content sample read at 0.73. The legal limit is 0.08.

Smith featured on the 2013 NCAA Tournament-winning Louisville squad, whose championship was later vacated by the NCAA. Outside of basketball, Smith started his own bourbon brand, Mr. and Mrs.
