Former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh officially announced his retirement from professional football on social media on Saturday, July 12.

Suh played for five teams across 13 seasons (2010-2022) in the NFL, five of those to start his career with the Lions from 2010-14. He last played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2022 season, playing in eight games and recording one sack for the eventual NFC champions.

"I left it all on the field, and now I’m stepping away with peace and gratitude," he wrote on his social media platforms.

The Lions drafted Suh with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft after Suh put up a dominant senior season at Nebraska in 2009. Suh started all 16 games for the Lions in 2010, recording a team-high 10 sacks and 13 tackles for loss in his rookie season. For his effort, Suh was named the league's defensive rookie of the year and a first-team All-Pro in 2010.

Suh never had as many sacks for the Lions as he did in his rookie season, but was still named to the Pro Bowl four times (2010, 2012-14) in his five seasons with the Lions. He was also named a first-team All-Pro three times (2010, 2013-14) and a second-team All-Pro in 2012.

Instead of returning to the Lions once he hit free agency, Suh signed a six-year, $114 million deal with the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2015 season that made him the then-highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. He played three years with the Dolphins before moving to the Los Angeles Rams for the 2018 season.

Suh won his only Super Bowl as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who defeated the Chiefs 31-9 at Super Bowl 55 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. He played three total seasons with the Buccaneers before playing his last season in Philadelphia in 2022.

Among all Lions defensive players, Suh leads the franchise with 66 total tackles for loss and is tied for 15th all-time with 36 career sacks. The Lions were 42-42 in his five seasons with the team.

Suh announced on various social media accounts that his retirement coincides with the one-year anniversary of his father's death:

"Before he passed, he gave me one final piece of advice, 'It’s time to let football go. You’ve done everything you set out to do. Now it’s time for the next chapter,'" he wrote.
