Former Alabama Star Says Kalen DeBoer is Not Trying to 'Replace' Nick Saban originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Trent Richardson believes Kalen DeBoer is creating his own path in Alabama. And fans who expect him to be like Nick Saban should stop and understand his approach.

The former Crimson Tide running back emphasized how coach DeBoer has focused on being himself and is not concerned with replacing coach Saban. After building the program in Washington and taking them to the National Championship game, coach DeBoer completely understands how pervasive the approach should be.

The Alabama job comes with a lot of baggage and the brightest spotlight. Thus, DeBoer’s 'putting your head down and doing your job' persona will bring consistency to the Crimson Tide program.

Richardson explained DeBoer's approach to following Nick Saban, saying, “He’s his own person. He’s coming in with his own program. And what I do like about him is that he’s not trying to replace Nick (Saban). He’s not trying to reinvent the wheel. He’s just trying to make sure he’s carrying the torch and the standard to the highest point.”

Kalen DeBoer retained much of Nick Saban’s legacy. He understands the importance of continuity. But at the same time, he introduced his own rituals like the morning practice in order to sculpt the program as per his intention.

Obviously, the goal in Alabama is always to win the national championship. But DeBoer is doing it in a constructive and sustainable way. Not through lavish spending or big swings in the portal, but by slowly putting the pieces together so that they are ready when an opportunity presents itself.

The offensive production in Alabama has not yet reached the level DeBoer is definitely capable of achieving. The ongoing quarterback battle between Ty Simpson, Keelon Russell and Austin Mack can result in finding the leader for the offense.

Alabama kicks off their season against Florida State on August 31st in an away game.
