ORLANDO — It’s surely just a coincidence, but at the same as the full roster for the Elite 11 finals was being released, Jones rising senior quarterback Dereon Coleman was putting on a show in his team’s spring game.
Coleman, a Miami commit and the No. 13 player on the USA Today Florida Network top 100, had the same number of touchdown passes as he had incompletions — four — in a 31-14 rout of Apopka on May 23.
“I don’t know how many touchdown passes I had, and I don’t know how many yards I had,” Coleman said. “But I definitely want to know how many incompletions I had so I can work on it. I want to be great, no matter what I do.”
Coleman threw two touchdown passes to Larry Miles in the first half and added an 80-yard touchdown pass to DJ Hicks late in the second quarter.
He dropped in a perfect touch pass in the corner of the end zone to Tyler Coleman in the third quarter to cap his big night. Jones, the 2024 Class 4A state runner-up, removed Coleman from the game late in the third quarter.
Now, Coleman has his sights set on the Elite 11 Finals, which is held June 17-19 in California.
“It’s nothing too new,” Coleman said. “I am built for the moments. It’s time for me to show everybody what I actually can do. Give me a chance to compete with the boys and see what happens.”
Coleman will be joined by fellow Floridians Dia Bell (American Heritage, No. 2 top 100) and Will Griffin (Jesuit, No. 50 top 100) at the Elite 11 Finals. Last year, Mandarin’s Tramell Jones Jr. was the lone Florida quarterback to advance to the finals.
“We’ve been saying for the longest, the ‘26 Florida class is the best Florida class to be made ever, in my opinion, Coleman said. "We should go shine and show them what the Sunshine state is all about."
