In Week 3’s “Sunday Night Football,” the Kansas City Chiefs collected their first victory of the 2025 season: a 22-9 road win against the New York Giants. Much of the game was sloppy and ugly, but Kansas City did enough to improve to 1-2 before next weekend’s matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

First quarter

The Chiefs won the coin toss and deferred. Harrison Butker sent the ball to Giants running back Devin Singletary, who returned the kick to the New York 31-yard line to begin the drive. The Giants began with a run heavy approach. Running back Tyrone Trace was involved on New York’s first five plays, gaining 28 scrimmage yards. Rookie running back Cam Skattebo mixed in with an 11-yard gain, before being stopped for a yard. The Giants would stall at the Kansas City 28-yard line. With kicker Graham Gano reportedly going back to the locker room after injuring his groin in warmups, New York elected to go for a fourth-and-3. Linebacker Nick Bolton batted down Russell Wilson’s intended pass to Tracy, and the Chiefs took over at their own 28.

The Chiefs quickly reached third-and-3 after a short Patrick Mahomes run followed by a pass to running back Isiah Pacheco. Mahomes found wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster to move the chains. Mahomes appeared to have a spectacular throw to tight end Noah Gray to move into Giant territory, but the play was negated by a holding call on rookie tackle Josh Simmons. Smith-Schuster then converted a second-and-17 on a catch-and-run. The Chiefs would gain another first down and advance to the New York 36-yard line, but the early season struggles of the offense continued with three incomplete Mahomes passes. Butker came on for a 54-yard field goal. His kick hit the right upright with a loud DOINK! Fortunately, the ball bounced in, narrowly opening the lead at Chiefs 3, Giants 0.

Singletary returned Butker’s kick to the Giants’36-yard line to start the drive. A Wilson pass to wideout Darius Slayton just fell short of the line, but Tracy’s second down carry moved the chains. On the next set of downs, however, Tracy took the first two carries for five yards, but he was injured on the second play. Skattebo lost a yard on a pass on third down, and the Giants punted. Jamie Gillan’s kick was downed at the Kansas City 19-yard line, where Mahomes and company took over.

On first down, Kareem Hunt took a handoff for three yards, and the first quarter came to an end, with the Chiefs facing second-and-7 from their own 22-yard line.

Second quarter

A screen pass to Hunt gave Kansas City a first down to start the next frame. A bizarre sequence on the next play had Mahomes believing he had thrown an incomplete pass to Pacheco — but in reality, he threw a backwards pass and lost eight yards on a fumble. On second-and-18, Mahomes did complete a pass to Gray to gain significant yardage, but an illegal contact penalty on the Giants gave Kansas City a first down. The Chiefs moved into Giant’s territory after an 11-yard run by Remigio and a 27-yard pass to Smith-Schuster. Then, the Chiefs stalled inside the 40-yard line again, with an alignment penalty on tackle Jawaan Taylor negating a Mahomes scramble that would have set up a first down at the Giants’ 21-yard line. On third-and-17 from the 40, Mahomes connected with Gray to gain ten yards. Butker came on for a successful 48-yard field goal to extend the lead to Chiefs 6, Giants 0.

Singletary could only find the New York 26-yard line on the kickoff return to start the drive. The possession turned disastrous for New York. Wilson narrowly averted blitzing cornerback Jaylen Watson causing a fumble on first down, and the pass sailed incomplete. After stopping Singletary for minimal gain on second down, Wilson threw a deep interception to Chiefs safety Chris Roland-Wallace at the Kansas City 30-yard line. Roland-Wallace returned the ball to the Giants’ 47 to put the offense back on the field.

The drive started with an eight-yard Pacheco run, with a pass to Tyquan Thornton moving the Chiefs to the 32 on the next play. After six more yards for Pacheco, Mahomes and Kelce finally connected for their first play of the night to the 20. The Chiefs’ struggles finishing drives continued, with Kelce losing two yards on a reception sandwiched around two incompletions. Butker was no good from 40 on the field goal, and the Giants took over at their own 30.

Skattebo gained seven yards on first down before moving near midfield on the next play. The Chiefs then got New York to third-and-8, but Wilson dumped off to Skattebo for 16 yards to the Chiefs’ 34-yard line. After Singletary gained a yard on the next play, the first half reached the two-minute warning with New York facing second-and-9 from the Kansas City 33. Coming out of the break, Wilson was incomplete to Skattebo. The Chiefs then appeared to stop the Giants on third down, but a roughing-the-passer call on George Karlaftis gave New York a first down at the 19-yard line. A holding call against Chris Jones then gave them another first down five yards closer to the end zone. Skattebo then ran in for a 13-yard touchdown. With the punter Gillam taking the extra point, the Chiefs blocked the attempt, leaving the score tied at Chiefs 6, Giants 6.

Brashard Smith returned the kickoff to the 22-yard line, where the Chiefs took over with all three timeouts and 1:38 remaining in the half. They might as well not have gotten the ball back. After Mahomes was incomplete on first down, Mahomes and Pacheco did not connect with another backwards pass, and the ball momentarily ended up in the hands of a New York defender at the seven-yard line. Mahomes prevented a defensive score by getting the fumble back. After a run by Hunt, Matt Araiza came on for a punt. He sent the ball to the New York 44, but a catch interference penalty would start the Giants at the Kansas City 41.

A facemask penalty on rookie cornerback Nohl Williams moved New York to the Chiefs’ 26. After a four-yard run by Singletary, Wilson targeted star wideout Malik Nabers in the end zone. The ball found the hands of Jaylen Watson for an interception, giving Kansas City the ball at their own 20 with 49 seconds remaining in the half and two timeouts.

Pass rusher Brian Burns batted down Mahomes’ first down pass, though Burns was injured on the play. Mahomes found Kelce on second down for nine yards. Pacheco moved the chains, but the two plays exhausted Kansas City’s timeouts. Mahomes was incomplete on three passes, but a third down illegal contact penalty kept the drive alive. On the next play, Mahomes escaped pressure and launched a pass down field to Hollywood Brown, who drew contact and a penalty to the 11-yard line. After one attempt at the end zone, Butker came on for a successful 28-yard field goal as time expired. The three points extended the lead to Chiefs 9, Giants 6 at the half, with Kansas City set to receive the second half kickoff.

Third quarter

Remigio started the Chiefs at their own 26 after the kickoff. Pacheco gained three yards, and then Mahomes found Brown at the Chiefs 46 for a first down. Pacheco moved the drive into Giants territory with an eight-yard run. After Pacheco lost a yard on second down, Mahomes found Kelce on third down to advance to the Giants’ 33. A seven-yard throw to Brown and outside run by Smith moved the chains again. After Pacheco gained ten yards, he saw only a four-yard gain on first down from the 12. A three-yard throw to Smith-Schuster set up third-and-three from the five-yard line. Mahomes found Thornton in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Butker’s extra point stretched the lead to Chiefs 16, Giants 6.

Singletary reached the New York 32 on the kickoff return. The Chiefs stopped Skattebo for minimal gain on first down, but Wilson escaped the pocket on second down and scrambled for 14 yards to the 46. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart came on for one play and scrambled for three yards on first down. Chris Jones sacked Wilson for a four-yard loss on second down, and Wilson could only scramble for eight yards on third-and-12. Gillam came on to punt. Remigio took the ball at the 14-yard line — and returned it five yards to the Kansas City 19.

Hunt gained three yards on first down, and a five-yard throw to Thornton set up third-and-2. Mahomes found Gray for a ten-yard gain. On the next series, Hunt gained nine combined yards on first and second downs, but Mahomes missed Thornton deep on third-and-1. The Giants took their first timeout with the Chiefs lining up to go for the fourth down. When players returned to the field, Araiza was on to punt. Gunner Olszewski fielded the kick at the New York 11, and he returned it to the 20 to start the drive.

Wilson found Skattebo for a 21-yard gain on the first play. The third quarter came to an end with Wilson finding tight end Theo Johnson — and the entire Giants offense pushing him to the Chiefs’ 49-yard line for a first down.

Fourth quarter

Wilson appeared to start the final frame with a sideline throw to Wan’Dale Robinson, but Robinson was ruled to had gone out of bounds before catching the ball. Nabers finally made his first catch of the night on second down, for four yards. Wilson was incomplete deep to Nabers — and he and safety Bryan Cook appeared injured while tangled with each other on the play. On fourth-and-6 from the Chiefs’ 45-yard line, a pass interference call on Trent McDuffie kept the drive alive. Wilson found Skattebo to the 28 on first down. After a seven-yard completion, Dart came back on for Wilson. After a pair of Skattebo runs, Wilson found Slayton for three yards on second down before being stopped for a one-yard loss on third. The injured Gano came into the game and managed a 25-yard field goal to trim the lead to Chiefs 16, Giants 9.

Remigio could only find the 23-yard line on the return. After a four-yard gain by Pacheco, Mahomes was incomplete on second down before finding Thronton near midfield on third. Mahomes took heavy shots from the Giants front line on both plays. Smith and Brown caught passes for 18 combined yards on the next two plays. Two plays later, Mahomes appeared to connect with Thornton for a spectacular touchdown, but it was ruled that he did not maintain control. A play later, the two connected with Thornton making a seemingly more difficult catch just in front of the goal line. Hunt punched the ball in for a touchdown on the next play. But an unsportsmanlike conduct foul on the running back would force Butker into a 48-yard extra point attempt, which was no good. The lead only extended to Chiefs 22, Giants 9.

Singletary started the Giants at their own 37. Skattebo carried for nine yard and then caught a pass for nine yards — setting up a first down at the Chiefs’ 45-yard line. After George Karlaftis sacked Wilson for four yards, Wilson found Slayton for a first down at the 35. The Chiefs had a chance to get off the field on fourth down after a Giants penalty and three short gains. But Wilson got a pass off to Robinson to the four-yard line. Wilson was called for intentional grounding on first down, moving the ball back to the 14. After a designed Wilson run for four yards, he was incomplete on third down. On fourth-and-goal from the ten, Wilson again saw a pass sail out of the end zone — to heavy booing from the New York crowd.

Taking over at the ten-yard line, Hunt carried for six yards on first down, and the Giants took their first timeout. Hunt saw no gain on second down, and New York again called timeout. On third down, Mahomes went deep to Brown, but the two could not connect. Araiza came on for the punt, and Olszewski fielded the ball at the 32. He returned it to Giants’ 39 to start the drive.

After a false start, Wilson found Nabers for nine yards on first-and-15, bringing the game to the two minute warning. Facing second-and-6 from the 43, Wilson could not find Skattebo on the sideline. On third down, Watson nearly had his second interception of Wilson of the game. Leo Chenal brought Wilson down after a two-yard gain on fourth down, and Kansas City took over at the New York 45.

Three Mahomes kneel downs brought the clock to triple zeros. The Chiefs avoided the first 0-3 start of the Andy Reid era. After Sunday’s action, the Los Angeles Chargers sit atop the AFC West — with a head-to-head victory over the other three teams. The Chiefs, the Denver Broncos, and the Las Vegas Raiders will all head into Week 4 with a 1-2 record.

Injuries

Safety Bryan Cook appeared to suffer a head injury in the fourth quarter while tangled with Giants wideout Malik Nabers in the end zone. He walked off with training staff and was seen going to the locker room. The Chiefs announced Cook as questionable to return with a neck injury. He returned later in the quarter.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu left the field with staff in the fourth quarter. He returned on Kansas City’s next defensive series.
