Maybe it means our interior line is still suspect..and there are lots of 320+ dudes in the NFL...just not on our defense where most guys cap around 310
so they need a big dude to see if our interior line can move him on run plays.
But in most cases it means the staff sees something they like and they need to know if the guy responds quickly to coaching so they can make a decision on whether or not he has a future with the club.
Or it could be both. It never hurts to have a big line plugger sitting in the wings on a league minimum deal.

or...the bitter hateful side of me...says they could be using his big ass to boost the confidence of our young and developing linemen.
Bingo! - as @oaken1 said.

It means that Simmons most likely are showing more that your average UDFA/camp body and they want to test it out. Doesn't mean that he makes the team or is on trajectory to start.

Means that the coaching staff likes the development prospect of him and testing if he is so good that they need to statch him away.

He is so good that they need put him on the active roster, so no other teams steals him like they did with Weaver or Gaines?

Does he get injured that for some reason never heals and he ends up in IR for the entire season like Elijah Jones.

Or can they convince Simmons of the developmental timeline and put him on the Practice Squad where he would want to stay and not sign with other teams?

If they like him but feel he needs more development he will develop a mysterious nagging leg or back injury that keeps him on IR all season long.

Where has anyone said that Simmons is better? People are speculating that Simmons may battle for a roster or PS squad spot...not being the best IDL on the team.

You are arguing against something no one said or implied.

People are using the facts that he's gotten snaps as some kind of barometer of his talent. It's not. It's less than meaningless, as are positive words. If you can call basic attribute talk (big, strong) as positive words.

I'm old enough to remember BA bigging up Carlton Agudosi in OTAs. At least he made the roster for a game or two before being out of the league a year later. Never got a snap though.

Zero chance Simmons makes the roster. None. Zilch.

I don't even know why were talking about him. There are better UDFA's with more chance of making the roster. Josh Fryar has a far better chance.

A few UDFAs become quality players, so I will put it at 1%.
So there’s a chance?

Actually I’m pulling for the kid but then again last year I was pulling for T. Palmer and still am.

Why? I suspect it’s an ingrained thing as a Cardinals fan, I like the underdogs of the world.

Now I think about it I would actually like to increase those odds.

An UDFA is getting hype from the Cardinals media department. That is not random. It very well could be that Simmons is looking much better than you would expect. I’m rooting for it.

If I remember correctly when a fringe player gets hype like this they actuallly have a pretty good chance of making the team. Can’t remember all of them. There was a receiver named Urban, another receiver with a weird helmet, Aaron Francisco and that OT Keith something.

But this a very different team and Monti has created much better depth, so overall that maybe pushes it to 5%

Here is the thing...you don't have to talk about him. But just because you don't want to, doesn't mean others don't. And your assertion that Fryar has a "far better chance" is equally silly. These guys are all UDFAs. They all are a long shot to make the roster regardless of the depth chart in front of them at this moment.

A vet with 70+ NFL starts is going to get cut as things stand, it ain't going to be 2 so they can keep a 24 year old NT with horrible college stats.

Sure, they are all long shots. The long shot with 52 starts at RT for one of the best college programs in college ball in a room with 90 year old Kelvin Beachum and Christian Jones to compete against has a much better shot than the DT6 from Tennessee who never passed 28% of snaps and has some of the worst stats I've seen from a 6 year college player and who is up against Bilal Nichols, LJ Collier, Justin Jones and Dante Stills for a roster spot.

That seems obvious to me.

You're right, I don't have to talk about him, but the "Calais said Simmons is big and strong so he must be really good actually" stuff is all a bit silly. I was drawn in by the thread starting with Simmons is a monster and could make the roster as DT 3 or 4 :thud:

Shockingly enough roughly 15-20% of signed undrafted rookie free agents make opening day rosters or are placed on IR their rookie season.

Seems awfully high. There are 83 players in camp and 53 on the active roster. That is 4-6 players making it to the 53.

Does it included PS? Then it probably fits IMO.

Where did you get that number?

How many UDFA's do you think get a shot? Most teams only bring a few into camp...that 15 to 20 percent probably averages out to about 1 player per team or less

Maybe they need him out there taking up space on a run down. They sure sucked vs. the run and got pushed around a lot. Teams easily got the first down vs.the Cards D. Maybe they need his big body to just get in the way while the athletic lighter defenders swarm around. He might make the practice squad, maybe even the team. CC will influence him, make him better.
