The departure of Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay from the Philadelphia Eagles was a calculated loss for the franchise. They had been prepared for that well before the team even hoisted the Lombardi in February.
Yet while there is some worry about whether or not the team will be able to dutifully replace Slay's impact on the roster, those concerns may be a bit over the top.
And here’s why …
Philadelphia already has his replacement on the roster. And he may just finally get a shot to play at the highest level moving forward.
For all his success at Georgia, cornerback Kelee Ringo fell all the way to the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and remains one of the youngest players in football. On a defense that is getting younger by the roster move, the former Bulldog is penciled in as the team's starter opposite Quinyon Mitchell.
And he was ready for a starting role, according to Slay, as early as his rookie year.
“I actually went up to my DB coach and was like, I don’t know but I’ve been watching Kelee in practice against A.J. (Brown),” Slay said back in 2023. “I see his fundamentals and technique was improving each and every day. I was like man, he’s been doing good.”
Vic Fangio is Philadelphia's defensive coordinator, though. And he won't simply put Ringo in a role he isn't ready for.
With the way things look right now, though, the Eagles may very well be on the path to have three cornerbacks (including Mitchell, Ringo, and DeJean) who are all under 24 years old.
They are getting younger … and the worries might just go away as they come on.
