Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman didn’t just stumble into drafting quarterback Kyle McCord in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He made it a mission.

Roseman’s pursuit of McCord was unusually hands-on for a late-round pick. According to team sources, the Eagles GM personally reached out to Syracuse offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon to get an in-depth scouting report on McCord before the draft. This level of interest underscores Roseman’s conviction in McCord’s potential, even in a quarterback room already brimming with young talent.

“Process. Really quick processor,” Roseman said during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. “The ball's coming out really quickly with anticipation and accuracy. You know, leading passer in the NCAA. You just go down his games this year, and it’s like 340, 380, 390. I mean, it’s unbelievable. He’s throwing the ball all over the field.”

Roseman’s familiarity with McCord predates his collegiate career. The 23-year-old is a St. Joseph’s Prep product, a three-time state champion and former five-star recruit. After a solid but unspectacular stint at Ohio State, McCord transferred to Syracuse, where he lit up the ACC, throwing for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns while completing 66% of his passes.

Despite the gaudy numbers, McCord slipped to the sixth round—a move that raised eyebrows among analysts. But for Roseman, it was an opportunity to snag a player he’d been tracking for years.

“We know him really well. St. Joe’s prep graduate. Three-time state champion in high school,” Roseman said. “Goes to Ohio State. I think he had two career losses at Ohio State, you know, as a starter, and then goes to Syracuse and just performs really well there.”

The Eagles’ quarterback depth chart remains fluid heading into training camp. With Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts locked in as the starter, the battle for backup reps will feature second-year passer Tanner McKee, developmental prospect Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and now McCord.

McKee made a compelling case last season, completing 3 of 4 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns against Dallas in Week 17 and posting 269 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Giants the following week. But McCord’s quick processing and anticipatory throws could give him an edge in the competition.

For a team that prides itself on maximizing late-round value, McCord could prove to be another Howie Roseman steal. And with preseason reps ahead, the young quarterback will have every opportunity to validate his GM’s belief.

As Roseman put it, “When you find a guy who fits your system, who you know well, who’s been a winner at every level, you don’t let that opportunity slip away.”
